Friday, January 3rd
11:30 AM
Location: Meet at Shorewood Public Library and walk in Shorewood
🌟 No registration required
Shorewood Public Library and the Shorewood Longevity Project present “First Friday Walks”! These 30-40 minute guided walks through the village were planned mindfully to help build community and wellness through winter, and encourage us to keep moving our bodies even when it seems that everything else has slowed down. Walks will begin at 11:30 AM and all are welcome to join! The walk is stroller-friendly, but please leave pets at home for the safety of all walkers.
Walks will be held in light rain, but if the weather is really inclement (heavy rain, ice, unsafe conditions), we will cancel. Additionally, feel free to call the library any time at (414) 847-2670 to check in on the status of the walks.
Please dress for the weather, bring water, walk at your own risk, and have fun!
We are so excited to walk with you!

The Beatles eclipsed all expectations of a concert audience, appearing before 55,600 mostly screaming fans at New York’s Shea Stadium in 1965. Overcoming an overmatched sound system, it was epic, but it almost never happened! When it did happen, it changed rock music forever. This lecture from speaker Terry D. Rindt will discuss the road to Shea, the often overlooked encore 1966 concert, and its enduring legend.

Children sing, dance, and play instruments with their caregiver as they practice keeping a steady beat, replicating rhythm patterns, and using their singing voice. Wisconsin Conservatory of Music (WCM) uses the Smart Start early childhood music program that makes an intentional link between these music skills and cognitive skills, allowing children to develop skills in memory, attention perception, and cognitive flexibility.

Hygge (ho͝oɡə) is a defining characteristic of Norwegian culture which describes a sense of coziness and comfortable conviviality. Creating such an atmosphere and enjoying good things with good people is a great way to enhance our wellbeing and sense of community! With winter comes cold and harsh weather, but that does not mean there is no opportunity to bring hygge into our daily lives. Join us for an evening of coziness where speaker Teresa Olson, owner of Olson House, will discuss the ways in which we can create these welcoming spaces in our homes, workplaces, and beyond. Stick around after the lecture for some community crafting; coloring sheets and puzzles will be provided, but feel free to bring your own craft!
This program is generously co-sponsored by the Shorewood Longevity Project.

Through stories, our children will get to know Martin Luther King Jr. and his teachings. We will be empowered to understand and celebrate our differences while recognizing the similarities and connections we all share. Rona will lead kid-friendly discussions about race and racial justice and address how even the youngest kids can take big actions in small ways. Changes Coming to Hoopla Service
We deeply value the enjoyment and enrichment Hoopla has provided our patrons over the past few years. However, due to the rising costs associated with the service, our libraries must reassess how we offer Hoopla.
If you use Hoopla through your Milwaukee County Federated Library System card, you may experience some service changes. Beginning January 1, 2025, we will be reducing the number of Hoopla borrows from four to two each month. We believe this change in checkouts will help us to use our limited resources fairly to serve everyone.
For more details on this upcoming change, visit our blog here.

The Horse
by Willy Vlautin
Recommended by NOAH
"Willy Vlautin is one of my favorite writers working today, and here is my chance to share him with you! This is Vlautin’s first book since 2021’s gripping The Night Always Comes, and once again he delivers. His writing aches with the pain of hard living and tough choices, yet brims with humanity. His characters and their predicaments are so fully and messily mortal. To read them is to invest yourself in their troubles, giving your heart to their fate, just hoping for the best. And the absolute beauty of a Willy Vlautin story is that your heart is always in good hands. Just a wonderful book. Maybe his best."

The Shining
by Stephen King
Recommended by KAYLA
"I read it for the first time many years ago, but decided to revisit it before touring The Stanley Hotel in Colorado, which is something I'd dreamed of doing for a very long time! Experiencing the book alongside the history of this hotel that scared King so bad he had to write about it has given me a newfound admiration for the work, and a trove of amazing memories to associate with the venture, including getting engaged in the mountains the night before!"

Recommended by BEN
"Colanzi writes with such confidence and trust in the reader. Each of the seven stories demand and reward critical engagement in such a way I rarely find in contemporary literature. She evokes such powerful emotions and haunting reflections with the barest though most cleverly selective language. Each story, as short as they were, left me in a chaotic state of rage and sadness with the plainly honest understanding of the hollowness of the world."

Detective Beans: And the Case of the Missing Hat
by Li Chen
Recommended by ABBY
"Meet Detective Beans (just Beans for short), a young cat sleuth dedicated to doing whatever it takes to solve the case. After a night of mystery movies with his best friend, Biscuit, Detective Beans wakes up to find his detective hat is missing. There's only one thing to do: hit the streets of Cat Town and find that missing hat! Cat Town is full of suspects, from the neighborhood bird to a magician in the park, and each twist and turn in this journey leads to an interesting new encounter -- and to solving a much bigger case than Beans could have imagined."

Lexington
by Kim Wickens
Recommended by CAROLYN
"I loved the book Lexington about the famous racehorse from the 1850s. So much amazing history in it about the development of horse racing in America, the history of black jockeys and trainers, and how the American thoroughbred breed was developed. He is the horse that is the subject of the popular fiction book Horse by Geraldine Brooks, as well. SO MUCH TO SAY ABOUT HIM!!! And I went on a road trip to see his skeleton!"

Recommended by KATE
"With interweaving themes of theater, art, and game design, this novel examines complicated relationships from multiple perspectives, revealing new insights with each shifting point of view. Beautiful, lyrical language underscores an epic story of creation, tragedy, and growth."
