News

Dear parents/guardians,

This is the last newsletter of this year. The past few weeks have been busy weeks with the TTO project weeks for the lower years, a Cambridge exam for the upper years, the charity action of the Interact Club of Aruba and a Christmas party for all grades.

After all this hustle and bustle, it is time for everyone to enjoy a well-deserved holiday. The students and teachers can rest for the next three weeks and we hope to welcome everyone fresh and rested again in January.

We wish you happy holidays and a good start to 2023. We look forward to seeing you again in good health on Monday 9 January 2023!

Spanish oral assessments in real life

For Spanish, the pupils of class 2 had to complete some modules with an oral test. The purpose of this test was to further develop the Spanish speaking skills of the students. It is important that the pupils not only learn the language from a book, but that they actually produce the language in practice.

A real village with streets and various shops had been created at the side entrance of the school. With the help of their regular study materials, the students had to show each other the way in Spanish. The traffic lights, the roundabouts, and the zebra crossing should of course not be missed. The students were able to show their Spanish skills in an educational and creative way.

The teachers were very satisfied and saw the students grow, not only in their language, but also in their skills. Compliments for the efforts of the students.

College Fair

Our students from classes 4vwo, 4havo, 5vwo and 6vwo paid a visit to the University of Aruba to experience a tour of the various available studies, and to explore some ideas for their future education.

The students attended various presentations of the programs at the Faculty of Law, Accounting, Finance and Marketing, Hospitality and Tourism and Arts and Science.

It was a fun and educational morning for our students,

during which they were able to focus on their future

plans.

Q. I have a break, am I free then?

A. You should always report to the study room (11) during a break. If all goes well, you will also see this in your schedule. If this is not the case, please report to room 11 and pass this on.

A. If you think you should not be in a kwt class, discuss this with your subject teacher. If he / she indicates that you can leave, he / she will send an email to Mr. Kieran to arrange this.

TTO Project Week

Year 1: Turista riba mi Isla

During the week of November 28th - December 1st, the first year students participated in the first project week of the school year. This project was entitled Turista riba mi isla and the students got to do several activities throughout the week that most tourists do when they visit our island. The students visited the Aruba Aloe Factory, the Rock Formation, San Nicolaas and Oranjestad to name a few. In addition to this, the students successfully completed the Aruba Certification Program training and became official ACP ambassadors of Aruba. In order to celebrate this achievement, they went on a trip across the island and ended the week by showcasing their final products to their peers.

To top it all off, the students got a number of delicious Aruban snacks to fill their bellies.

Year 2: Healthy Lifestyle

On Monday the students started the project week with the kickoff event by Dr. Busari which was a keynote speech about living a healthy lifestyle.

Activities

This week was filled with fun educational activities such as a cooking course, yoga, a dance workshop, and much more. In the cooking course, the children made humus, yogurt cups, wraps, and more, in the dance workshop they did some hip-hop dance, and in the yoga, they practiced some breathing exercises and poses. The students enjoyed it a lot.

The kids worked on their project and used facts they learned throughout the week. On the final day of the project week, the students presented their final product in front of 5 panelists.

After the presentations, there were fun beach activities planned for the students with healthy snacks from one healthy bowl. Overall it was a very exciting week.

Year 3: Be Your Own Boss

As part of the TTO project week, all third classes participated in the “Be your own Boss” (BYOB) course at the end of November. This course is offered by Bureau Qredits and co-financed by the Aruban Ministry of Economic Affairs. The BYOB course consists of 7 parts in the field of micromanagement. During this entrepreneurship course, the students find out whether there is a young entrepreneur in them.

The first day the students started with a Kick-Off. It was explained what the course entails and what they will be doing this week. During the week they worked on their online assignments as part of this course and created their own online portfolio.

Several workshops were also given during this week, including 'Mindfulness' by Derin Cuçuk and a workshop by agency PSY by Glendeline Arends-Maldonado about motivation and what to focus on for your future.

On the third day we also visited the Chamber of Commerce. The students were given an extensive tour by Sue-Ellen de Freitas Sousa. She provided the students with all the information and they were able to ask questions. As strange as some of these questions were…..

The full 'BYOB' course lasts 2 weeks and will be completed during the next project week in April. The end product will consist of a complete portfolio, a detailed business plan of their own future company, and a final pitch.

The best 'shark tank'-like pitch will have a chance to present their plan in front of a real jury, including representatives from Qredits.

Charity action Christmas - Giving back to the Elderly

The Interact Club of Aruba has once again organized a successful Christmas campaign. This year's charity is 'Giving back to the Elderly'. Many packages of care products have been put together, with which we hope to surprise the elderly in retirement homes. In total, an amount of Awg 4500,- has been donated! Thank you very much for this generous contribution!

Special thanks to the Interact Christmas Committee, in particular Alisha Daryanani, Adriana Hoevertsz and Victoria Candelaria. And our exceptional Santa helpers: Chloë van der Poel, Kimberley Lee, Valentina Cheng, Jeylynn Crouch, Gaby Perez and Joey Wing.

Thank you Interact Club of Aruba for this meaningful action!

Cambridge Exams

Last week was an exciting week for the students of 4HV, 5H and 5V who had registered for the Cambridge exams at B2 and C1 level.

The oral exams were held from Wednesday to Friday, after which it was time for the written exams on Saturday.

The results will now take a few weeks to arrive, we obviously hope that the hard work will pay off for everyone!

Christmasdinner & dance

Last Thursday evening, the year was concluded with a festive Christmas dinner for (almost) all students and teachers of Schakel College. The picnic tables were festively set, the gazebo was decorated with Christmas lights and about 240 students and teachers gathered for a joint dinner.

After dinner, the students (and some teachers) could enjoy themselves on the dance floor, accompanied by the tunes of DJ Kash.

All in all, it was a successful Christmas and a big thank you to the school band led by Juliette for providing the entertainment, and of course the Christmas Committee, Fleur and Susanne, who made all of this possible.
