“NeuroID in the NeuroICU”

Anna Cervantes-Arslanian, M.D.

Associate Professor of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Medicine, Boston University School of Medicine and Boston Medical Center

Dr. Cervantes-Arslanian is a neurologist and associate professor of neurology, neurosurgery, and medicine, at Boston University School of Medicine and Boston Medical Center. She has created several programs at BU/BMC, most notably being the founding chief of the division of Neuroinfectious Diseases in 2013 and the chief of Neurocritical Care, growing that service from one neurointensivist in 2015 to a fully independent Neurosciences ICU in 2019, now with 9 faculty neurointensivists, 6 nurse practitioners, a UCNS accredited fellowship, and full research program. She served as the director of the Comprehensive Stroke Center successfully leading the program to its Joint Commission certification in 2018. Together with the departments of cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, infectious diseases, and addiction medicine, she created an interdisciplinary workgroup for management of all patients with infectious endocarditis and was also instrumental in the development of BU/BMC multidisciplinary Recover clinic for patients with post-acute sequalae of COVID-19.

Her research focuses on the overlap of neurologic infections and critical care, such as complications of HIV, extraparenchymal neurocysticercosis, and infectious causes of cerebrovascular disease. She has written extensively about neurologic complications of COVID-19, with over 20 publications on that subject in the first 2 years of the pandemic.

Dr. Cervantes-Arslanian is a dedicated educator, recognized locally at BU/BMC as Attending of the year by the Neurology residency, and the AAN as an A.B. Baker Teaching award recipient. She has mentored over 60 trainees on research projects leading to posters or publications.

Dr. Cervantes-Arslanian is at heart most fully devoted to the practice of clinical medicine. She has been elected to Boston Universities’ Clinical Excellence Society representing the top 1% of physicians and has been recognized as a Top Doctor in Neurology in Boston. She was elected as a fellow of the American Academy of Neurology in 2022.
