The September Villager is all about the Joy we shared with friends and family over the summer. Yes, I have included many photos, but nowhere near enough to show the fun families had enjoying the beach or the free paddleboards and kayaks on the deep blue waters of Canandaigua Lake. Sounds of laughter echoed around the fire pits, at Open Mic and on the pickleball and tennis courts. 

Dancing to the Rolling Heads, September 4, was the perfect way to welcome fall. The day and evening presented weather challenges, but the Rec. Committee was ready with extra tents. They moved the food inside the community center, and the band underneath the cover of the new maintenance facility.  As the last song finished - Don't Stop Believing by Journey, the rain began to fall.

Many of us begin traveling in September or leaving for our "winter homes". I am hopeful you will carry joyful memories of the summer of 2022 throughout the coming months, with thoughts of partying again together next May.

BHV has numerous volunteers who made this summer successful and special. Certainly, members of the Recreation Committee and the Bristol Cliffs Yacht Club, but also those who helped with Naples Open Cupboard, the library, the landscaping, driving the shuttle, the recycling and the beach activities. A Big Thank You to All. We are grateful for your willingness to serve your community!

Please consider sending in book or movie suggestions or reviews, poems, recipes, and articles of interest to all. The Villager is more entertaining with varied content!

Spotlight on Daisy Case - Artist in Residence

Introducing Daisy Case - by Jon Link

That we are a community, not merely a development, has been wonderfully clear this summer. Residents have sprung into action organizing events, making friends, creating beauty. One person in particular has lent her artistic talents to enliven a drab spot at the base of our skyway. Many in the community know Daisy Case. Daisy is a resident artist of sorts and her contributions continue to define and elevate our chosen spot on the lake. Take a look at our logo, a Daisy work debuted in February. This representational piece is lively and inviting, just the right characteristics for our unique lakeside home.

Daisy, who insists she is not “a formal artist,” is something of a lifelong learner. Her introduction to oils began in her hometown of Mansfield PA “35 or 40 years ago.” Mansfield, a college town, had lots of opportunities for art instruction, and Daisy took advantage of them. Nowadays, Daisy participates in local workshops offered through Lake Country Decorative Artists. Daisy tells me that chapter members have the privilege of instruction from traveling artists they like to call “Big Brushes.” If you don’t find Daisy at home, you might learn that she’s out of town taking instruction at an art retreat workshop as far afield as West Virginia or North Carolina. Daisy says “you pick up something different from every artist.”

Daisy, who is experienced in oils, watercolor, pen and ink, applying oil to pen and ink, colored pencil, acrylics, and most recently chalk painting, will say she doesn’t have a process. “I learn step by step and I teach step by step.” Yes, teach. Many in our community know Daisy as an art instructor. She loves learning technique and sharing technique, especially in oils, her favorite medium. Daisy finds great satisfaction in teaching and marvels at how much she has done. When students express doubt by saying they can’t, Daisy will ask “but do you want to?” It is this process of taking students from little or no belief in themselves to amazement at what they can create that Daisy finds “most rewarding.” At this writing, Daisy is working one-on-one with a student on oil technique. In September, it will be Daisy’s turn to lead a workshop for Lake Country Decorative Artists. Then later in the month she's planning a class at the community center “before some of these snowbirds go back.”

"I see something I like and I paint it", Daisy says humbly yet convincingly. On a trip to Paradise Island in the Bahamas with her late husband, something caught Daisy’s eye while she was sunbathing on a chaise lounge. Inspired, Daisy proceeded to draw a Caribbean scene of a building with a waterfall and palm trees. She completed the work with watercolors. In October, Daisy assures me she will be bringing her sketchbook and “probably a little pallet of watercolors” when she sails the Rhine on a Viking cruise with her sister. 

As a member of the Ontario County Arts Council, Daisy’s works have appeared in a variety of places including juried shows at Fort Hill Performing Arts Center and Wood Library. 

“It has surprised me; it’s nothing I planned on doing,” Daisy tells me while recounting her many years of painting. Daisy was not a fine arts major. “My background is in business,” she explains. When Daisy retired from the work world she was a marketing VP for a regional bank.  

“I love color.” When Daisy joined us on a recent pontoon ride to catch the setting sun, she reminded us that it's what comes next that's worth waiting for. “Sometimes that sky will just light up with oranges and reds.” “I love the reflections in the water...colors are reflected in the water.”

Daisy chuckles when she recounts her family's surprise when she left her hometown of Mansfield and traveled north to live on Canandaigua Lake. “I'm in love with the lake,” she confesses. Daisy’s been in Bristol Harbor for 8 years now, and I think she plans on staying. We’re delighted as long as she does.

Naples Food Pantry Update

September, 2022

The BHV Food Pantry Volunteers held another successful donation event to benefit the Naples Open Cupboard on Saturday, August 20. Kids' backpacks for back-to-school days, shelf-stable food items, bedding, clothing and household items were donated by more than 25 BHV families and 3 car loads were delivered to the food pantry that day. In addition, sufficient cash donations have been received to purchase the food cart that the pantry managers requested and the purchase of the cart is in progress. Thanks again to all these generous folks for their support of this important community effort.  

BHV volunteers have been regularly helping with the bi-weekly Foodlink deliveries to the pantry. The next delivery will be on Monday, September 19th, at 10:30 am. Food items are left on pallets right outside the pantry entrance and boxes need to be brought inside and items shelved. The process takes about an hour. If you would like to help with this, please email Liz Smith at elizsmith7x7@icloud.com for details.

The food pantry donation bin in the vestibule of the Community Center is monitored for donations and all items left there will be delivered to the pantry weekly. In early November, we'll sponsor a donation event to help the pantry in collecting non-perishable items for their Thanksgiving meal boxes. Please stay tuned for that event and join us in helping over 180 families in our area who benefit from these efforts. Thank you!

 Wednesday, September 7, Introduction to Sketching with Howard Van Buren, 4:00pm - 7:00pm $25. Howard Van Buren is a member of the National WS, American WS, New England WS, and the Ontario County Arts Council. “Sketching Trees, Rocks and Nature” introduces shapes, shading, and shadows along with techniques for sketching trees—with foliage and without foliage, in the distance and close up—and rocks—in a field, in water—along with mountains and hills that might form a backdrop to a landscape.

Thursday, September 8, Euchre, 3:00pm - 5:00pm. Bristol Library offers a friendly game of euchre every Thursday. Don't know how to play? Don't worry! We'll teach you!

Monday, September 12, Bristol Bookends: Memoir Writing Class, 1:45pm - 3:45pm. The Bristol Library is again offering a Memoir Writing Class. Continue to enjoy the benefits of writing, whether for yourself, for family and friends, or for a worldwide audience. Explore the many ways you can make your writing come alive as you take part in writing experiences and sharing sessions. We plan to meet at the park (weather-permitting), or at the Bristol Library. Saturday, September 17, Ligthhouse Watercolor Painting Class with

Howard Van Buren, 10:00am - 2:00pm, $25. Howard Van Buren introduces basic watercolor techniques through the iconic lighthouse image. You will see your image come alive on your paper, which includes the image pre-sketched onto high quality watercolor paper and the tools needed such as brushes, paint, mixing trays, a container of water. Howard will mat and sleeve the image when you are done.  

Monday, September 19, Embroidery Class, 5:30pm-7:00pm. Need a little bit of help? Joan Hall is again offering an embroidery class at the Bristol Library. Embroidery reduces stress, keeps your brain healthy, and builds confidence. Third Monday of every month.

Saturday, September 24, AARP Driver's Safety Course, 9:00am - 4:00pm, $30. When you take the AARP Smart Driver course, you could be eligible for a multi-year discount on your auto insurance.
