DPW employees are once again collecting non-perishable food for those less fortunate with the Ken Stempowski Memorial Food Drive. DPW continues this proud tradition initiated by a colleague who began the department’s annual collections more than 44 years ago.

Food donations will benefit the Macomb Food Program and are now being accepted at DPW between the hours of 7 a.m. and 3 p.m., Monday through Friday and at the Community Relations Department, weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Collections will be accepted through Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2022. Checks made out to the Macomb Food Program are also appreciated.
On Thursday, Nov. 10, 2022, three memorial sculptures commissioned by the Nordin Brothers were installed.

The new sculptures memorialize two fallen police officers and one fallen firefighter as a part of the public art program. The sculptures are located in their namesake parks: Imus Park, Nelson Park, and Sawyers Park. The pieces are approximately 16 feet tall and made from stainless steel and glass, to remain true and beautiful while also standing out against the trees in the background.

Each piece is called a “Lifetree” as it shows the changes in our lives and growth over time. They also symbolize how life can change in an instant and speak of how the officers’ and firefighter’s dedication and sacrifice helped others’ lives.

Human Rights Day is observed every year on December 10.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is a milestone document, which proclaims the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being - regardless of race, color, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. Available in more than 500 languages, it is the most translated document in the world.

The Sterling Heights CommUNITY Alliance encourages all citizens to learn more about the need for human rights for all, including vulnerable groups such as persons with disabilities, indigenous peoples and migrants.
