Week of December 12, 2022

Hello!
During our holiday intermission, take some time to become familiar with the new and improved Pacificmasters.org!

We are thrilled to support Pacificmasters.org. As with all new sites, it is a work in progress. Watch for developing content as we move forward. The Update will continue to deliver concise, up-to-date information to our Pacific Masters Swimming community.

In this issue, you will find information on upcoming swimming events and stories of interest. Club Registration for 2023 is in full swing. It is important that the club is registered before individual swimmers can register with that club.

Happy Holidays! The next Update will appear on January 9, 2023. The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, January 4, 2023

Stay fit,
The Pacific Masters Swimming Committee
Note from the Pacific Masters Chair
Thank You
A Message from our Chair, Phyllis Quinn

Thank you to everyone who attended our Annual Celebration and Meeting. it was fun to hear Jeff and Suzanne share their swimming stories, and to celebrate our Pacific Masters volunteers.
As we wrap up 2022, I want to thank our pool and open water event hosts. We were able to hold many of our usual events and are currently working on reinstating some of our former events. I am especially thankful that we had two new hosts for the SCY and LCM championship events. They did such a good job that we will be returning to enjoy their hospitality.
The Executive Committee will be working on goals for 2023, so if you have any bright ideas, please contact someone on the committee.
We are always recruiting new volunteers. There are some short-term projects that would be a perfect opportunity for novices. This is a great way to get your feet wet and test the volunteering waters to see where you can lend a hand. Please let me know if you are interested.
We had many new faces at the USMS Relay meeting in Denver in March and at the Annual Meeting in November, so I may be contacting some of you to see if you want to help. I'm sending a big heartfelt thank you to all the volunteers in 2022 for all the work that has gone into Pacific Masters Swimming.

See you in the water in 2023!

USMS Stroke Development Clinic
Summary

The USMS Stroke Development Clinic, also known as USMS Clinic Course for Coaches, was held at City College, San Francisco, December 3 and 4, and was well-attended. The attendees received guidance from two of the most knowledgeable and experienced mentors in the field, Bill Brenner and Mel Goldstein

If you missed it, don’t worry! USMS Clinics and Courses are planning to return in September 2023. Mark your calendars!

These clinics help pool communities thrive. With a comprehensive curriculum, local committees can ensure that their coaches are well prepared to work with swimmers of all age groups and experience levels, allowing more people to enjoy the sport.

Carol Nip, Coach Albany Armada Masters, and Ian King, Walnut Creek Masters swimmer, have thoughtfully written about the Clinics from both a Coach's and a participant's point of view. Click here to read these summations
Coaches Speak
Dedication Mixed with Enthusiasm

We took the opportunity to talk to a number of our coaches about the key roles they play in all that Masters provides to our members.

Watch this video to hear from six of our coaches and learn more about what they do, their different relationships with their swimmers and where they derive their greatest satisfaction from coaching Masters. Thanks to Dakota Kim for creating and producing this video during the 2022 LCM Championships. View the video here.

Editor's Note
Recapping 2022

The Update Editors team would like to thank everyone for all the help, support and time. Thank you for submitting your stories and sharing them with us, and the Pacific Masters Swimming community. The slice of life stories, the events that are being hosted and your accomplishments were things we loved seeing in our inboxes.

Things have slightly shifted back to normal. Competitions and drop-in swims are slowly coming back. Coaches are still giving tough swim sets, including those challenging holiday sets.

It was great to swim at the Morgan Hill Aquatics Center for Short Course Yards Championships hosted by Quicksilver Masters. One of our editors called it the "Anti-Far Westerns" because historically the pool has hosted Far Westerns for SCY. Far Westerns has historically only been for 18 and under swimmers.

In July we had our Long Course Meters Championship at the new Miwok Aquatics Center in Novato, with Marin Aquatics Masters being first-time hosts. The facility was beautiful with sweeping views of Mt. Tam, and a new, fast pool.

Walnut Creek Masters successfully hosted the Short Course Meters Championship (Kerry O’Brien SCM Championship), a meet that reminded everyone why we love to swim so much.

Happy Holidays! Happy New Year! We hope to see you in the water in 2023.
