Parshat Vayera

The parsha begins with the following description of a special day in the life of Avraham:

Avraham is sitting outside his tent in the heat of the day.

Three men come walking by.

Avraham runs out to greet them.

Avraham bows to them.

Avraham greets them "Im Na Matzati…"

They agree to join Avraham.

The very same parsha shortly thereafter has the following description of a special day in the life of Lot:

Lot is sitting by the gate of the city in the evening.

Two angels come strolling by.

Lot stands up to greet them.

Lot bows to them.

Lot greets them "Hinei Na Adoni Suru…"

They say they would rather sleep in the street... and then agree to join him.

What is the difference between these two episodes in the Torah?

On a simple level we can see two interesting distinctions within the contrasting of these episodes. There is a difference in how these guests are described or named, and there is a difference between their responses.

Avraham was visited by men (anashim), as opposed to Lot, who was visited by angels (malachim). This difference is even more peculiar as the Midrashim and especially the picture painted by Rashi is that these guests were one and the same. They were really the same angels that visited Avraham and Lot and became their guests. Rashi brings out the idea that everything is relative. Compared to Avraham they were more like people since Avraham was a very holy person and it was normal for the angels to interact with Avraham just like regular human interactions.

Lot, on the other hand, was not so frequent to meet angels so it was a huge contrast, or alternatively we can compare Lot to the holiness of angels and see that there is that huge contrast that stands out. This is a similar idea to one of the opinions as to why Noach was called a Tzadik in the Torah; he was a Tzadik only in contrast with those around him.

I wanted to focus a little bit more on the second difference between the episodes. In the case of Avraham, the guests answer affirmatively after being invited. Lot's guests first say no and eventually agree to join him. Why did the angels refuse Lot while accepting Avraham's initial invitation? Rashi gives a simple explanation that you cannot refuse a great man like Avraham. The question still remains since they were not human beings who would be swayed by greatness. They were angels who followed Hashem's command. They each had their own specific jobs without much leeway to make their own choices.

There may be something additional to note: Avraham ran excitedly right away, as opposed to Lot who just stood up and invited them to come join him. Avraham desired the guests while Lot was afraid of their presence. Rashi recounts the Midrash that Lot was trying to hide their tracks and presence so that no one would know that Lot was bringing guests into his home.

The Malachim saw Avraham's wholehearted desire to help them and accepted, as opposed to Lot's insincerity. We can see the lesson of Avraham's quest through the foil of Lot.

In our classes in school we try to learn from the Avot and Imahot. Avraham's zeal, energy, and excitement is something that I hope that everyone, including our younger and older students, will be able to identify with and bring with them each time they have an encounter with a mitzvah.

Introducing: Mitzvah Momentum!

We are excited about a school-wide (K-8), year-long initiative that we introduced to the students called Mitzvah Momentum!

Students in grades K-8 will be focusing on a particular mitzvah during each part of the year. In November and December, we will be focusing on Chesed, January-February we will be focusing on Bikur Cholim, March-April will be Tzedakah, and May-June will be Hakarat HaTov.

There are various components to this program depending on the age of your child, outlined in the Mitzvah Momentum At Home Chart that appears above.

As part of this program, we are asking each Kohelet family to discuss a Chessed that you would like to get involved in as a family during November and December. Please click here to download the Mitzvah Momentum At Home Chart and then fill in your family's Chessed and attach a picture of your family performing the Chessed (if you'd like).

News from Kohelet Yeshiva

The KYHS girl's basketball team was part of a group of over 150 Jewish high school students from across the United States that traveled to Auburn University on a joint NCSY & Athletes For Israel mission. During their visit our students played in a first-of-its-kind basketball tournament (where they had an exciting overtime win over Rae Kushner Yeshiva High School to earn a spot in the semi-finals!), volunteered in the local community, spent Shabbat on the Auburn campus, and attended the Auburn University's men’s basketball team's opening game. Go Kings!

Our middle school students went to the Jewish Relief Agency this week to help pack boxes for their monthly food distribution that helps families in need. Before heading out on their trip to the JRA warehouse, the students got to hear from Rebbetzin Dr. Adina Shmidman, who spoke to them about chessed.

We had an amazing 4/5 Fridayton today! Thanks to all of our 4/5 students for their wonderful Divrei Torah and incredible ruach! Thank you to Mr. Jerry Stern for helping us make our Fridayton tisch so terrific!

Mazal tov to our Director of College Counseling & Academic Advising, Rebecca Chabrow, who was featured in this week's "Member Spotlight" by the National Association for College Admissions Counseling (NACAC), a national organization of over 26,000 college counseling and college admissions officers!
