Monkeypox: What you need to know
Monkeypox is a disease with a small number of cases reported in the United States – about 50 in Massachusetts since May 2022 (CDC 2022 Map & Case Count). While the risk is low, it’s important for you to know more and learn how to protect yourself.

  • What does it look like? Monkeypox shows up as a rash or lesions usually after flu-like symptoms. The rash often looks like pimples or blisters in the genital area or all over the body.
  • How does it spread? Anyone can get Monkeypox. It is spread by close prolonged contact, often during sex or intimate relationships, with someone who has lesions.
  • What to do? If you have new sores, a rash or lesions, call your provider right away. Follow the CDC guidelines for isolating and living with someone who has Monkeypox.
  • Who’s at risk? The overall risk is low as it’s harder to transmit Monkeypox than other infectious diseases like COVID. You cannot get it by passing someone in the supermarket who has it.
  • Is there a vaccine? Yes – if you’re at higher risk of exposure, you may be eligible for the vaccine. Find out more and where you can get vaccinated here. CHA is working on becoming a provider for the vaccine. Please check the Mass DPH website for updated locations.

New Center for Inpatient Child & Adolescent Psychiatry
In June, CHA opened new hospital services for children with acute behavioral health needs, like depression, anxiety, mental illness, and neurodevelopmental disorders like autism. Our new center, located in Somerville, is staffed by an amazing team of Psychiatrists, Psychologists, nurses and other health professionals.

Like other states, Massachusetts faces a behavioral health crisis with a growing need for psychiatric hospital services. Patients with mental health needs often spend days or weeks in emergency departments or other hospital settings, a practice known as “boarding.” CHA’s new 69-bed center is already helping children and their families from across the state get the care they need.
