Northern Colorado Back Country Horsemen

On July 18th and 19th the Northern Colorado Back Country Horsemen replaced a gate for the Roosevelt/ Arapahoe National Forest in a remote northern area of the forest. The old gate had been hit by a vehicle and was not repairable. The NCBCH crew removed the old posts then replaced and cemented new ones on the first day. They let the cement cure overnight and the next day they installed the brace posts, tension wires and new 16 foot gate. Jay McDonald, Nancy McDonald, Jenifer Nordstrom and Kelly Richey along with an NFS team did the work. Sean Uhle, NFS Range Land Management Specialist specifically requested the NCBCH chapter for this gate replacement project. Pictured are Jenifer Nordstrom, Sean Uhle, Kelley Richey, and Nancy McDonald.

Story by Jay McDonald, NCBCH Vice-President

Gila Back Country Horsemen ride into the next century of the Gila Wilderness.

The nation's first designated wilderness, the Gila Wilderness, celebrates 100 years in 2024. This 558,000-acre wilderness, where solitude prevails, has served as a sanctuary for outdoor enthusiasts, nature lovers, and Gila Chapter Back Country Horsemen of New Mexico (Gila BCH). When Aldo Leopold first advocated to protect this area, he wanted it to be a place where one could take a pack trip for two weeks without retracing one’s steps. What a great visionary! Today, over 500 miles of trail create a network of opportunity across the varied landscape. As described by a Gila BCH board member, “The trails in this area traverse extreme mountains with awe-inspiring vistas, deep canyons with bubbling streams, lush forests, open grasslands, and hills adorned with pinon and juniper trees, as well as sandy, dry arroyos.”

Long Cane Horse Trail, BCHSC

A recent project undertaken by BCHSC was to replace tie rails at a beautiful lunch spot by a lake on the Long Cane Horse Trail, which is in the Long Cane Ranger District of Sumter National Forest. Historically there had been tie rails for equestrians at this location, but had fallen into disrepair and removed over the years. Due to the fact there had once been tie rails at this location, USFS personnel cut through red tape and accepted our offer to replace them. Volunteers worked in the rain to set posts and notch them. A fundraiser ride was held to celebrate the accomplishment on June 1st! We had a food truck by the lake and a volunteer made homemade blueberry ice cream! It was a great way to celebrate National Trails Day!

June 2024 Chairman Letter

In Case you didn't get a chance to read the most recent Chairmans Letter, here is a link. Check it out!

Wow, June is upon us which means we are six months into the year, I’ve haven’t had an opportunity to get on a horse yet because of the snowy weather we had here in Montana back in May.

At our National convention is Casper, the possibility of BCHA finding itself in a legal battle somewhere was brought up, is it a possibility? We hope not but in reality, it’s probably a matter of time.

VOLUNTEER HOURS UPDATE

Hello Members,

BCHA Volunteer Hours Committee has updated the volunteer hours reporting form. The reason for this change is because we feel we are missing out on opportunities through the USFS and other organizations by not providing trail information that you all have volunteered to maintain. By collecting trail names we open the doors for potential grants and other funds paid to BCH states for their time.

The updated form is available by clicking the link below. And please reach out to the volunteer hours committee if you have any questions. volunteer@bcha.org
