What’s coming up on the church calendar in the new year? Among other things

  • Discussion of the book A Walk Lillian Boxfish Takes by Kathleen Rooney on Tuesday, January 8 at Books by Women
  • A presentation by the Presbyterian Historical Society on Sunday, January 13
  • A “Connecting to the Heart” workshop offered by the Replogle Center for Counseling and Well-Being on Saturday, February 9
  • The annual Gala of Hope, benefiting Chicago Lights and the Replogle Center, on Friday, March 1

Two things that are not on the church calendar for December 30 are
  • Sunday School: There is no Sunday School this weekend; it will resume January 6
  • Youth group gatherings: Youth will not meet this Sunday but will worship together on January 6

At the turning of the year—this Monday evening, December 31—we will come together with neighbors for our annual New Year’s Eve service in the style of Taizé.

Cohosted by Holy Name Cathedral, this quiet 7:30 p.m. service in Buchanan Chapel offers moving music, space for prayer, and meditative pause for reflecting on the year past and looking ahead to the year to come.

For those who would like an additional meditation opportunity beforehand, a labyrinth will be available in Anderson Hall between 6:00 and 7:30 p.m. For those who have not walked a labyrinth previously, labyrinth hosts will be on hand to offer guidance.

  • placed in the offering plate this Sunday
  • received online by midnight on Monday, December 31, or
  • have been postmarked in 2018 (mail to Resource Development, Fourth Presbyterian Church, 126 E. Chestnut, Chicago, IL 60611.2014)

For information about making gifts through stock transfers or required distributions from one’s IRA or prepaying one’s 2019 Annual Appeal pledge, please contact Katy Frey Bever.

We are looking for more entrants for our Sunday, January 13 Chili Cook-Off. Share your favorite chili with us and enter the running for the competition to win this year's Golden Ladle for Best Fourth Church Chili!

Those entering a chili in the cook-off are asked to sign up here and then bring a 6-quart pot of chili to Borwell Dining Room by 10:30 a.m. on January 13.

Everyone is invited to enjoy this chili lunch between 10:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 13, sampling as many chili recipes as you like for $15 per person. All proceeds will support the 2019 Fourth Church Youth mission trips .

"Bringing America Together." "Finally, Some Good News about Cancer." “Growing Young: Helping Young People Discover and Love the Church.” "Searching for the Image of God in a Digital World." “Sustainability, Happiness, and the ‘Slow’ Movement.”

All these and more are topics that will be discussed by fifteen speakers as part of the January Series at Calvin College. Opportunity to experience the "fifteen days of free liberal arts education" will be offered through a live video feed presented at Fourth Church on January 3-23 at 11:30 a.m. each weekday (except Monday, January 21) in the Page Smith Room.

A complete schedule of speakers—which includes Nicholas Kristof, Jenna Bush Hager, and Craig Detweiler—is available online here.

Dreaming of warmer times and places? Consider joining us for one of the 2019 trips planned by our World Mission and Social Justice Committee!

Travel to Guatemala—and work with Common Hope alongside members of the local community—from August 4 to August 11 with Tom and Sue Schemper.

Applications for the trips are due Tuesday, January 15.

Is volunteering going to be on your list of New Year’s resolutions? If so, we could use your help! Specifically, we are in particular need of
