Fox Facts is a weekly newsletter published by Huntington Middle School. It includes important information related to school activities, programs, and events. It also includes a section for the Huntington Middle School PTA and a space to publicize community events and organizations.

Dear HMS Families,

This Friday, December 2, 2022 all of SMUSD 5^th graders from Carver and Valentine will be going over to San Marino High School for a wonderful experience called Arts Rock. Arts Rock provides our incoming HMS students to the wonderful world of visual and performing arts at HMS and SMHS (aka VAPA). Why is this important to HMS? This will provide our students (and chaperones) an opportunity to see and experience a bit of the incredible program offerings at HMS and SMHS in the visual arts, band, orchestra, dance, and choir.

The event will be organized convention style so that all students get to see and learn about all of the arts offerings at HMS and SMHS. Selected HMS and SMHS students will be facilitating VAPA workshops. Also, all VAPA teachers will be on site working with their students.

All students will be fed a grab and go lunch at SMHS during this event.

Once again, we are excited that to introduce the incoming 6th grade students to have this opportunity to see and learn more about the VAPA programs at HMS and SMHS.

City's Notice of Street Rehabilitation Project

Paving operations will be on hold from 11/18/2022 to end-of-day 1/9/2023 to minimize inconveniences to residents and businesses during the holidays
The grind and overlay/signing and striping will restart sometime in mid January
The contractor will provide the City of San Marino a new revised schedule
The City will post this information on their website when available
The City will disseminate public notices for dates of commencement of work that affect street parking

Renovation Plans for San Marino Center

The San Marino City Council approved a renovation project for the San Marino Center and contracted with CABD Construction to bring the building up to code, match the decor of the neighboring Crowell Public Library, and make it a usable, flexible, and modern community center facility. Construction is anticipated to begin in mid September with demolition sometime in October. Construction activities will affect parking. Please see attached for the SM Center Project parking collaboration with the City of San Marino for details. The yellow parking area is first come first serve. More information can be found here. Free breakfast and lunch!

For the 2022-2023 school year, the State of California is mandating the Universal Meals Program at all schools in the state. With the Universal Meal families need to fill out a Meal Application form, which was part of the online registration package. SMUSD will be offering both breakfast and lunch. Please encourage your students to come and grab a free lunch and a free breakfast daily. SMUSD will be using the Point of Sale system to record the meals for lunch, therefore please remind your students to memorize their 5 Digit lunch number (student ID number). This will help expedite the meal service. For the first week of school the lines may be a bit longer than usual as students may have forgotten their lunch number. Student Connectedness to HMS Campus Life

HMS events, activities and athletics play a huge part in the overall development of our students. We want our students to stay connected to all the wonderful and interactive school events and activities that are available to each student. Students will be notified of school events and activities with a Schoology notification or an email to their student Gmail account. HMS students and families are also encouraged to frequently visit the HMS school website.

Starting Tuesday, 11/15/22, employees, parents, and students may pick up free COVID rapid test kits (2 kits/4 tests) from the School Health Office in advance of and for a safe return from the Thanksgiving holiday. https://smusd.info/freetests2022

Reminders

Attendance:

Parents, the attendance online absence form on the school website is for explaining absences. If your child has a disagreement about an absence on a particular day/period, please reach out to the teacher first.

Late arrival/Early departure:

If your student comes late to school, even if it's 5 minutes late, the parent and the student need to check in at the front office. Your written confirmation needs to be documented and a slip is given to the student to present to the teacher.

Same process for picking a student up early from school. Parent must come in to the office, present ID and sign the student out, to ensure the student is going home with an approved guardian. Thank you for taking a few minutes to help us maintain correct attendance and safely monitor our student's whereabouts.

NO LUNCH DROP OFFS.

Complimentary breakfasts and lunches are available every day in the cafeteria.

Due to COVID restrictions we need to limit the number of visitors to school. If your child forgets his/her lunch, please do not bring it to him/her. They can eat from the cafeteria for the day. For the latest information please visit our SMUSD site here

Cell phones are not to be on or in student's possession from 8:00-2:50. Keep them POWERED DOWN and in the lockers.

Keep our campus clean:

Please remind your students to throw away their food wrappers/containers at snack break and lunch. Thank you for helping us keep our campus clean.

Textbooks/Chromebooks:

Students are responsible for the textbooks and Chromebooks they check out. If a textbook or Chromebook is damaged so it cannot be checked out anymore the student is responsible for the full price of the replacement, plus shipping and handling.

Computers may only be used in class at teacher's direction. Keep them locked in your lockers during lunch, away from the lunch areas and food.

Do you know a super volunteer who is active in the HMS PTA and in our San Marino community?

The HMS PTA is now accepting nominations for the 2022-2023 Honorary Service Awards. To nominate an outstanding volunteer from HMS, please fill out a nomination form for EACH NOMINEE

New volunteer opportunities

at the Crowell Public Library!

Teens in Grades 8-12 are invited to join the new Teen Advisory Group (TAG). TAG members contribute to the Library through projects, serve as a voice for teen patrons, and help shape what they see at the Library. Teen volunteers will be able to earn community service hours and gain valuable experience that looks great on a college application or resume. Your copy should address 3 key questions: Who am I writing for? (Audience) Why should they care? (Benefit) What do I want them to do here? (Call-to-Action)

Create a great offer by adding words like "free" "personalized" "complimentary" or "customized." A sense of urgency often helps readers take an action, so think about inserting phrases like "for a limited time only" or "only 7 remaining!"
