DC MOVES FORUM updates
Sept 22 FORUM Re-creating DC MOVES

We started a great conversation on what the highest potential outcome could be from working better together - we identified the conditions for success that would need to be in place and listed some actions that need to happen to make that possible.

I will share the video when its ready AND let you know how you can join the conversation to build on what we started. Keep an eye out for the next WOTMs update!

We are so very grateful for the beautiful space provided at Fiddlehead Care Farm by hosts Breanne and Stephanie, and for the talented film maker and story teller Tristan Barrocks, and for the work of Town Tees for producing our DC MOVES orange T-shirts - I wore mine on Sept 30th, AND for the participants and all the fabulous treats they brought for our snack potluck.

The Ontario government is launching the next phase of its integrated employment services system to help more jobseekers and people on social assistance in York, Halton, Stratford-Bruce Peninsula, and Kingston-Pembroke.

The Ontario Government has announced several housing and homelessness funding initiatives:
  • Providing more than $2.5 million to help create 14 units in Barrie.
  • Providing over $3 million provided to help create 16 housing units in Guelph.
  • In St. Thomas, the Ontario Government has provided $927,831 to help convert an existing building into an emergency shelter.
  • Providing $2.25 million to help support 26 bachelor units in the City of Brantford for vulnerable individuals.
  • Providing more than $800,000 to help create two affordable housing units in Barrie through a partnership between the Ontario Aboriginal Housing Services and the Barrie Native Friendship Centre.
The Office of the Federal Housing Advocate just released a series of research reports that explore the growing trend of financial firms using housing as commodity to grow wealth for their investors.
Private equity firms, pension funds, and real estate investment trusts (REITs) are increasingly acquiring, operating, and developing housing as an investment strategy, with the aim of maximizing returns for shareholders.
This phenomenon, known as the financialization of housing, is not only driving house prices out of reach for middle-class families – it is also denying members of disadvantaged groups their fundamental human rights.
The reports confirm this trend is having the greatest impact on disadvantaged groups, such as vulnerable seniors, low-income tenants, people with disabilities, members of Black communities, recent immigrants and refugees, and lone-parent families.
Financialization is contributing to unaffordable rent increases, worsening conditions, and a rise in evictions – often due to renovations or rebuilding with the goal of charging higher rents. There is also a well-documented connection between financialization and increased morbidity and mortality in long-term care facilities.
How this organization is working to eliminate homelessness in the UK
This week, we are joined by Matthew Downie, the Chief Executive at Crisis—a national charity that works to mobilize politicians, organizations in the homelessness sector, and advocates in an effort to end homelessness in the UK.
Through the organization's 50-year history of pioneering research and supporting thousands of people out of homelessness, they work with the belief that through collective action and political will, we can solve homelessness once and for all.
Matthew Downie joins us this week to speak about the housing and homelessness crisis in the United Kingdom, as well as the National Transformations Plan created to reduce and eliminate homelessness in the U.K.
Dufferin's Labour Shortages: Working towards Solutions
We want to hear from local stakeholders about workforce and employment challenges and brainstorm local solutions for said challenges. We will share some information about the labour market and some ideas as to where the people are, why recruitment may be a challenge as well as what could affect retention. Then we want to hear from you
  • What are your biggest challenges now? What will they be in six months?
  • How will that impact your business or organization?
  • What do we do, or promote if it already exists, in the next year to move the needle towards meeting needs? What requires longer and how can we get started now?

Be a part in building the solutions for the Dufferin County labour market - attend this event!
Held at the Georgian College Orangeville campus on Thursday, October 27th, 8:30 AM - 12:00 PM.
Light refreshments served.

As part of Career-Ready with CTMA: Expanding Opportunities program, we have been working with Ontario school boards and have manufacturing students looking for co-op placements for summer 2022, fall 2023 and/or winter of 2023.

Many of these students are in special programs where they are focusing on the manufacturing sector and are hoping to further develop their skills through a co-op placement.

Companies can receive 50% of the wages paid up to $5,000 in funding support for each placement they provide. The duration of each co-op will be a minimum of 6 weeks, but can be funded for up to 16 weeks of full-time work.

If you would be interested in more information and connecting with the school board in your area, please contact Veronica Kleinsmith at vkleinsmith@octe.ca.

One of the most interesting insights from newly released data is that rural nonprofits constitute nearly one quarter of all Canadian nonprofits. However, they employ just over a tenth of nonprofit workers and only account for 7% of nonprofit revenues. This invaluable data (which includes many more insights) can help us understand the dimensions and needs of the rural nonprofit sector in Canada.
Public Services and Procurement Canada has an online platform where charities, nonprofits and other eligible groups can register and get access to donations of surplus assets from the federal government.
Serving on a non-profit board is a meaningful and rewarding experience, and the skills and expertise of a board’s directors are crucial to its collective impact. Yet, many boards cannot train their directors in a comprehensive, efficient way, and many directors are constrained by their schedules and limited access to resources. With Capacity Canada’s Modern Board, participants get access to a unique and comprehensive course offered by experts in the governance of the non-profit board. The two-course program includes multi-media guidance offered through video lectures, reading material and journaling opportunities to reflect on your personal experience with board roles and responsibilities.
The All About Boards program has been designed to provide you with the foundational elements to help you govern effectively while introducing you to emerging issues in board governance. This training provides actionable resources and guidance so nonprofit organizations can move their governance from good to great.
