Palos Park Police Cadet Scholarship

At the Village retirement recognition of Mayor John Mahoney on Tuesday May 2, 2023, Palos Park Police Commissioner Dan Polk announced The Palos Park Police Cadet program scholarship, will be renamed the Mayor John F. Mahoney Police / Cadet Explorer Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to Palos Park Law Enforcement Explorers who have committed to the Police Cadet program for over one year. The cadets receive financial assistance via a scholarship to help offset the costs of their college education, as long as their major has an emphasis on public service and social service.

Commissioner Polk said, “We commend the Palos Park Police Cadets for their commitment and dedication to public service. We honor their service with a small token to help defray their college costs, with a cadet scholarship, which is funded by donations to support the PPPD Cadet program, training, education and equipment. Moving forward this scholarship will be renamed the John F. Mahoney Police / Cadet Explorer Scholarship.”

The Palos Park Police Cadet Program is an educational program for young men and women to provide experiences to help young people mature and prepare them to become responsible and caring adults. Exploring is based on a unique and dynamic relationship between youth and the organization in their communities. The Police Explorer post matches these individuals to activities in law enforcement and helps youth pursue their interests, growth, and development.

The Palos Park Police Cadet program provides funding through residents and organizations to help our cadets support their college tuition as they pursue public service focused degrees. We then award PPPD Cadet scholarships to our Palos Park Cadet Explorers.

Now is the Time to Invest in Communities

In addition to warmer spring weather, tax season is a common subject of discussion at this time of year. The Village of Palos Park is joining forces with cities, villages, and counties across the state to urge state lawmakers to “Invest In Communities” by returning a greater portion of your income taxes back to where they belong, right here in our community.

What does that mean? When the State income tax was established more than 50 years ago, it was agreed that a portion of it should be returned to each community based on population. In the State budget, this funding is known as the Local Government Distributive Fund, or LGDF.

In 2011, the State decreased the portion of income taxes that is returned to our community from LGDF. As Illinois lawmakers prepare this year’s State Budget, Mayor Mahoney and Mayor-elect Milovich-Walters, along with other local government leaders are urging the General Assembly to “Invest In Communities” and restore the Local Government Distributive Fund to 10%.
