(TRENTON, NJ – May 4, 2023) The Mobile Academy of the African American Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey (AACCNJ) held its first free work-readiness workshop on Saturday, April 22, at Kean University in Union County, New Jersey. A cohort of approximately 20 attendees gained insight on how to get a job or promotion and succeed in the workplace. Topics included Mining for Open Job Positions, Résumé Writing, Cover Letters, Interviewing Skills, LinkedIn Profiles, and General Business Etiquette.
Etiquette consultant, Jennifer Tyler-Washington, who facilitated the workshop, is the owner and CEO of I Am Polished, LLC, a woman- and minority-owned business. The company specializes in professional etiquette consulting in business, social, and customer service and helps individuals to confidently display a polished persona.
The inaugural cohort included men and women at varying junctures of their career journey. Some were entry-level professionals, others were supervisors, and yet others were previously incarcerated individuals. All had the same mindset – the desire to make the best professional impression possible, whether in person, on paper, or digitally.
“I would like to take a moment to say I did truly appreciate your time as well as the valuable information you shared,” a workshop attendee offered. “I did enjoy your demonstration of the concise do's and don'ts during the interview process. In addition to how you synthesized the information concerning strategies of how to appear for an interview. As well as business etiquette and law,” the attendee further added in her unsolicited comments to the event organizers.
“We applaud this first cohort of participants who thought it not robbery to invest in themselves and their career advancement,” stated John E. Harmon Sr., IOM, AACCNJ’s Founder, President, and CEO. “We look forward to hosting more work-readiness workshops throughout the entire state,” he added.
