The Gun Violence Prevention Summit is a gathering to equip and support violence disruptors and those doing the work of gun violence prevention in the neighborhoods of Cincinnati.


During the summit, participants will hear from anti-violence leader Erica Ford and local leaders, and have the opportunity to connect with other peace makers across Cincinnati.


This free event will be hosted at Christ Church Cathedral and is open to everyone working to reduce gun violence in Cincinnati. Learn more and register here.

Discerning a call to ordained ministry? Attend the Explorers' Retreat

Are you discerning a call to ordained ministry? Do you want to explore further an interest in being a deacon or priest?


In our diocese, one enters discernment for ordained ministry by attending the Explorers’ Retreat, organized by the Commission on Ministry (CoM).


The Explorers’ Retreat has two parts; Part 1 will be a two-hour Information Session held on Saturday, November 12, from 10 a.m. to noon, by Zoom. Part 2 is an overnight retreat at Procter Camp and Conference Center, scheduled for January 27-28.


Both events are required for those wanting to begin the formal process of exploring a call to ordained ministry in the diocese. Learn more.

Convention news

Pre-convention meeting and Nominee Forum Nov. 2


The pre-convention meeting and nominee forum for the 148th Annual Convention is scheduled for Wednesday, November 2 at 6:30 p.m. on Zoom.


Since time during the business session of convention is limited, the pre-convention meeting provides an opportunity to debate and ask questions about proposed resolutions or the budget.


The Nominee Forum is a chance for nominees to introduce themselves and let electors know why they are passionate about seeking office, providing an opportunity for electors to make informed choices.

Convention updates


The 148th Convention of the Diocese of Southern Ohio will take place on Saturday, November 19. Registration is open until November 4.


  • The convention will be a hybrid event – voting clergy and delegates can attend either in person at Christ Church Cathedral, or virtually via Zoom. 


  • You may register for either session using the online form. The form allows for individual registration or for congregation delegations.


  • A box lunch will be available for in-person attendees who request one on registration. Cost is $10. Attendees may also choose to bring their own lunch.

Nominations

The Nominating Committee seeks nominees for several elected leadership positions. A list and description of all available positions is available on the convention website. Gregory Howard, a Protective Security Advisor with the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency (CISA) serving Southern Ohio, will present a webinar on Active Shooter preparedness tomorrow evening, October 19, at 6 p.m.. Applications for Episcopal Community Ministries grants now open

ECM logo

The 2023 Episcopal Community Ministries (ECM) grant application is now available online. ECM enthusiastically welcomes applications from congregations that need help funding existing outreach ministries or are seeking seed money to launch new service initiatives.


To qualify for an ECM grant, ministries must have the active participation of church members and be supported by congregational resources. Grants will now be awarded twice annually – in February and July. Application deadlines are December 15 and June 15.

State of Ohio Security Grants

House Bill 110 of the 134th General Assembly and House Bill 338 authorize the Department of Public Safety and Ohio Emergency Management Agency to provide grant funding to nonprofit organizations, houses of worship, chartered nonpublic schools, and licensed preschools for eligible security improvements that assist the organization in preventing, preparing for, or responding to acts of terrorism.


Applications are due no later than noon on November 4.

New Christian Parenting and Caregiving Initiative with grants of up to $1.25 million

A new Christian parenting and caregiving initiative has been launched by Lilly Endowment, Inc. The program initiative invites congregations to apply for grants of up to $1.25 million to create new and/or enhance existing programs that help parents and caregivers share their faith more confidently with their children. Building Intentional Small Groups

Building Intentional Small Groups


In a collaborative offering with The Stevenson School for Ministry in the Diocese of Central Pennsylvania, Miriam McKenney will lead a four-week series on starting and leading intentional small groups. Registration is free for people in the Diocese of Southern Ohio. All others may register for $50. Contact Miriam at mmckenney@diosohio.org for more information.

Licensed Worship Leader training


Licensed Worship Leader training will be held over Zoom and hosted by volunteer and certified trainer Mark Conrad. 


To be certified you will participate in two sessions, Saturday, October 22, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and Saturday, November 5, 10 a.m.to 12 p.m. Register here.

Safe Church Certification


All clergy, vestry members, licensed leaders (LWL, LEV, LEM), church staff, parish key holders, all volunteers and all outside group leaders that use parish buildings need to be certified in Safe Church.



Stay up to date with your Safe Church Licensure! Take the training today, or email Emma to find out when your certification expires (5 years from your last certification). 


Dismantling Racism


All clergy, vestry members, licensed leaders and church staff need to be certified in Dismantling Racism through DSO to keep your license up to date.


Racial Justice Bible Study 


A 6-week course focusing on Dismantling Racism and Racial Healing will take place on Thursdays, Nov 3, 10, and 17 at 7 pm. This training satisfies the requirements for Dismantling Racism training.

In addition to or in place of the course offering through DSO, you may participate in a training through the Absalom Jones Center for Racial Healing. These do fill quickly, please register soon if you need this training. Once you complete this training, please forward your certificate to Emma Helms-Steinmetz to have this noted in our diocesan files.

YEDI pen pal program

High school students with the YEDI initiative invite all 6th-12th grade students to participate in a diocesan-wide pen pal program. You will get to know someone your age in the diocese by exchanging old-fashioned letters. By signing up to the program, you will get a welcome kit with your pen pal’s name, post cards to send to your pen pal, suggestions on what to share and ask, and a flat YEDI*

"Slay: Being a Modern-Day Saint" Middle School Retreat

Procter Center and the Formation Team invite all 6 to 8th graders to join for an amazing weekend retreat Oct. 28-30 at Procter.

Interfaith Youth Gatherings with Cincinnati Kids4Peace 

Do you want to spend. time with friends? Make new friends? Eat snacks, learn, and grow together? Then come join us as we build community around love and understanding. You can identify with any faith, religion, spirituality, or none at all. All teens are welcome.


"Kids4Peace is a way to first make friends and then become more aware and educated on different types of people," Shanaz, a Kids4Peace participant, says.


The gatherings will take place at the ish Garage in Northside (4113 Langland St., Cincinnati, OH 43223) on the following Sundays from 2:30 to 4 p.m.:

Columbus Youth All Hallows' Eve party 

St. Patrick’s, Dublin, Youth Group is excited to host the first Columbus area youth event this year.


Costumes are welcome! Our evening will explore the command to not be afraid—using classic Halloween party games! We will also hold an All Hallows' Eve service around the fire pit, so dress in layers (blankets provided, too).

The evening will include dinner and a lecture by the Rev. Dr. Ott, who will address people’s stress and grief about emerging from COVID.

Red Door Community Concert: Syrodesy Flute Trio

The Red Door Community Concert series at Holy Trinity, Oxford, welcomes Syrodesy Flute Trio on Friday, Oct. 28 at 12:15 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public. Masks are suggested. The concert will also be available on Holy Trinity’s YouTube Channel.

Good Shepherd Refurbished Organ Celebration/Recital

3 p.m.


Marsha Reilly, assisted by Tristan Keaton and Sebastian Petzinger, trumpet, will present the first of three recitals celebrating the completion of the restoration of the 1954 Aeolian- Skinner organ at Church of the Good Shepherd, Athens. The other two recitals in the series will be Feb. 19 and April 30. Donations will be gratefully accepted.

Music Live at Lunch is a free, weekly concert series featuring a variety of music. Healing & Understanding: We Are One


Wednesday, October 26

On Oct. 26, Thomas More University and the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra will join with the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, the Cincinnati Boychoir, the Cincinnati Youth Choir, MUSE, the Cincinnati Men’s Chorus, and others to present a concert exploring race and justice in the United States. The even is part of the We Are One Festival taking place from October 22 to 26. 


The program includes Alysia Lee’s Say Her Name, Joel Thompson’s Seven Last Words of the Unarmed, and Rosephanye Powell’s Cry of Jeremiah. A panel discussion precedes the concert at 6:30 PM. The event is free, but reservations are required.

Joe Miller conducts the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music Chamber Choir and Chamber Orchestra in a program of music by J. S. Bach. The performance features choreographer Taylor Carrasco and dancers from the Cincinnati Ballet.
