Liza Boyd pilots Ondine D’Orleans
to Victory in the
$25,000 Marshall & Sterling Classic Hunter Derby

For Immediate Release: June 24, 2024
Aiken, South Carolina
The highlight for the hunters Week 2 was the $25,000 Marshall & Sterling Classic Hunter Derby. All riders who earned a ribbon in the Marshall & Sterling Classic Hunter Derbies at any of the Gulf Coast Winter Classics, Ocala Spring Classics or opening week of the Aiken Summer Classic, were given a complimentary entry to compete in this event, thanks to the generosity of title sponsor, Marshall & Sterling Insurance.
Liza Boyd of Camden, South Carolina piloted Neill Sites’ Ondine D’Orleans to the blue ribbon in the $25,000 Marshall & Sterling Classic Hunter Derby, besting a field of forty-three horse and rider teams.
Boyd said that she just got Ondine D’Orleans in March while in Wellington. “I saw her in Wellington, and she reminded me of my longtime horse Brunello who won the Derby Finals several times. I hadn’t seen a horse that jumped like him in a long time. When I saw her in the schooling ring, I asked if she was for sale and was told ‘no’.”
According to Boyd, Ondine D’Orleans was owned by Monique Huntingdon and Kasey Anzalone was the trainer. “I just kept bugging them until they sold her to me,” said Boyd. “My family owns Finally Farm and we bought the mare with Neill Sites,” she said. “She is very much a chestnut mare. She is a little opinionated, but pleasant. She’s really smart and you only need to tell her once. She doesn’t want to be ‘nagged’” said Boyd.
Boyd continued, “She is a 3’6” Green and was second in the $25,000 Hunter Classic during the Aiken Spring Classic. She is just starting to do the derbies.”
“The course and the jumps were beautiful. The brush was really pretty in front of the jumps and the bending lines were great for practicing and getting that experience. There was a walk through too, that was nice to teach them. It was a great course for juniors and amateurs. You could go as handy as you wanted,” she added.
“Daniel Geitner rides really handy, and he chose to do a tight inside turn in the handy round. It was really smooth, and I knew he’d do that,” said Boyd, “but I was far enough ahead after the classic round, that I wasn’t worried.”
According to Boyd, she is prepping for the Green 3’6 Incentives in Kentucky. “I’ve been showing at Classic Company shows since I was a kid, and we always love a Classic Company horse show, so Aiken has always been on our schedule. When I saw the prize money for this class, I decided to put Ondine D’Orleans on the trailer,” she said.
“We competed to get the exposure and so we could practice the handy turns. This class is great for up-and-coming derby horses looking to get that experience. It creates a great pipeline for bringing horses up to get them to the international level,” she said.
Second place honors went to Nancy McBrayer’s Apricot Lane, ridden by Daniel Geitner of Aiken, South Carolina. EMO Stables’ Sidenote, ridden by Jason Berry of Verona, Virginia, placed third and Geitner returned to the arena with Margaret Russell’s Quassini for a fourth overall.
Tesserae, owned by Linda Viens and ridden by Alexandra Ansteth of Spring, Texas, finished in fifth place. Fila, owned and ridden by Caitlin Burns of Denton, Texas, placed sixth overall and also won the Marshall & Sterling 3’ Non-Pro $1,250.00 Rider Bonus. Burns also earned the Marshall & Sterling 3’ Non-Pro $500 Rider Bonus with her own Primetime.
August Pines Farm’s Snow Patrol, ridden by Ansteth, finished in seventh place. Bon Voyage, owned by Jennifer Durr and ridden by Holly Shepherd placed eighth and Party Started, owned by Tricia Barr and ridden by Penny Lombardo of Loxahatchee, Florida, finished ninth overall.
Marseille, owned by Margaret Snyder and ridden by Adrianne Gamboa of Houston, Texas, placed tenth and Frog Pond Stables’ Primrose, ridden by Savannah Talcott of Wildwood, Missouri, earned an eleventh overall. Classic Blue, owned by Margaret Snyder and ridden by Adrianne Gamboa, wrapped up the class with a twelfth place.
Thank you Robert, owned by Japonica Cruise and ridden by Sophia Cruise of Covington, Louisiana, won the Marshall & Sterling 3’ $750 Non-Pro Rider Bonus. Caruso, owned and ridden by Madalyn Stein of Matthews, North Carolina, won the Marshall & Sterling 3’3” Non-Pro $1,250 Rider Bonus and Breaking News, owned by Hil Cat Farm and ridden by Catherine Castle of Folsom, Louisiana, won the Marshall & Sterling 3’3” Non-Pro $750 Rider Bonus. Cyngnus, owned by the Eyckenhoeve Group, Inc. and ridden by Faith Schuttemeyer of Boynton Beach, Florida, won the Marshall & Sterling 3’3” $500 Non-Pro Rider Bonus.
Bob Bell, President of Classic Company commented, “It’s so rewarding to see how many people competed in this class and traveled from as far as Texas to be here. Many of these riders earned a free entry after placing in one of the Marshall & Sterling Classic Hunter Derbies at our shows and we’re delighted to see them here in Aiken. Marshall & Sterling’s support of this important class has helped so many horses and riders develop the confidence and skills to be competitive in the derbies and hunter rings around the country. I know all of us here at the Classic Company and those competing here today appreciate how Marshall & Sterling’s support is helping advance the sport.”

GC Ponies, LLC’s Etch-A-Sketch Wins
$5,000 USHA Pony Hunter Derby Championship EAST, presented by Kickapoo Ponies

Thirty-one pony rider teams tackled the course, designed by Nancy Wallis, on their hunt for the blue in the $5,000 USHA Pony Hunter Derby Championship EAST, presented by Kickapoo Ponies.
GC Ponies, LLC’s Etch-A-Sketch, ridden by Tegan Price of Aiken, South Carolina, rode away with the blue after earning an overall score of 167.25.
According to Price, he rode 'Etch' for the first time the day before the Derby. His mother and trainer, Tara Heuberger, said, “He catch rides quite a bit and he’s ridden ponies for Robin [GC Ponies, LLC] several times.”
Price commented, “I rode Etch for the first time on Monday. He is very simple and easy to ride. The course was really nice, I loved the big ring and it kind of reminded me of pony finals,” he continued. “The classic round flowed really well and the rollbacks in the handy round were also really smooth.”

Price was a Gochman Grant Recipient at the 2022 Pony Finals. According to his mother, Tara, “So many trainers have helped Tegan along the way. While he does train with me, it takes a village and so many people have helped him along the way. It really is a great community.”
Price commented, “It’s easy to train with my mom because we don’t need to travel anywhere. We just go out and ride.” Tara added, “Sometimes we don’t see eye to eye on everything. Especially now that he’s fourteen. He has his own ideas. But we work well together with the ponies. When working with the green and young ones, I like to hear his ideas. It’s fun for me to see and hear how he figures his own way of dealing with the ponies.”
Tara said, “The Pony Derby had a beautiful course, ran really well and was very organized. The course was inviting but challenging and the ringside breakfast was great!”
Odyssey Orion, owned by Taryn Garrett and ridden by Brynn Garrett of Clinton, North Carolina earned second place honors with their overall score of 164. Kara Lynn Chenier Secord’s Rodeo Drive, ridden by Havens Secord of Timmins, Ontario, Canada, earned a total score of 163.25 and third place honors.
Captain America, owned by Frog Pond Stables and ridden by Robert Mercer of Wellington, Florida, finished in fourth with an overall score of 162.5.
BWI Ranch 1, LLC’s Whinny the Blue, ridden by Ivy Smith of Charlotte, North Carolina earned an overall score of 162.25 and fifth place. Sixth was awarded to Odyssey Cassiopeia, owned by Tarynn Garrett and ridden by Brynn Garrett. The pair earned an overall score of 160.75.
Frog Pond Stables” Cambridge, ridden by Robert Mercer, finished in seventh place after earning a combined score of 158.5 and Elle McCory of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, rode her own Beau Crevan to an eighth overall with a score of 155.75.
Sugar Rush, owned by Leslie Janiak and ridden by Corrigan Janiak of Swanton, Ohio, finished in ninth with a score of 151.25 and Farnley Charmed, owned and ridden by Laila Theurer of Darnestown, Maryland, earned a tenth placing with a score of 149.50.
FPF Deovolente, owned and ridden by Tinsley Saunders of Knoxville, Tennessee, earned an eleventh placing with a score of 144.75 and Veikko, owned and ridden by Alston Mclane of Vestavia, Alabama, wrapped the class up with a twelfth placing.
Next up for Price is the Pony Derby Finals in Kentucky where he will be riding Voxton Dude Perfect. Price was only ten when they got ‘Dude’ and he wanted to name him Dude Perfect because, according to Price, “ponies live up to their names and he’s going to be perfect.”
According to Tara “We’ve made him up together since ‘Dude’ was coming four. We’ve put four years into him and its taken a while to get him where he is now. Its been really fun working with Tegan on this project.

Deja-vu for ZaZa Z and Marylisa Leffler
Wins the $25,000 EMO Grand Prix

It was a case of Deja-vu for Leffler of Brookeville, Maryland and Rolling Acres’ ZaZa Z, when they returned to the winner’s circle for the $25,000 EMO Grand Prix for the second time in as many weeks at the Aiken Summer Classic.
Four advanced to the jump off round over a course designed by Paul Jewel of Lambertville, New Jersey with a time allowed set at 45 seconds.
Grant Seger of Aiken, South Carolina, in the irons of Fox Lair Performance, LLC’s Istina Van De Kapel FLP was first to go in the jump off round. Twelve jump faults in a time of 38.680 seconds, would earn them a fourth place overall.
Next up was Leffler and ZaZa Z. “I knew some of the other horses could leave some steps out and that made me a bit nervous,” said Leffler. “I tried to make my turns tighter and I went as fast as I could without having a rail,” she added.
The pair posted a clear jump off round in a time of 35.151 seconds and took the lead.
Laura Gaither Ulrich of Bahama, North Carolina, and her own Carnlea Premier followed Leffler. Despite posting a clear jump off round, their time of 35.877 seconds could not beat Leffler and ZaZa Z and would see them finish in second place.
Holly Shepherd of Grand Bay, Alabama and Loretta Patterson’s Giovanni Massuere sat in the enviable last to go position. Eight jump faults in a time of 39.525 seconds would earn them a third overall and secure the win for Leffler and ZaZa Z.
Final placings had Rosalie Midyette of Aiken, South Carolina and her own Everest in fifth place and Danielle Geitner, also of Aiken, earned a sixth placing with November Hill’s Jalanne. Midyette also finished in seventh place with her own Luigi Van De Kornelishoeve.
Elizabeth Siadous of Roswell, Georgia and her own Cartoucen Z earned an eighth placing and Shepherd and Loretta Patterson’s HJ Hercules finished in ninth.
Alexandra Ansteth of rode Juan Ortiz’ Maserati Van’t Specialleke to tenth placing and Madison Kondrecki of Deland, Florida, finished in eleventh and twelfth with her own E Storm Cat and Onyx, respectively.
According to Leffler, Rolling Acres brought eighteen horses to Aiken. “All of our customers loved it, and we can’t wait to come back next year!”

E Storm Cat Wins the $7,500 Aiken Saddlery Welcome, presented by Purina

Madison Kondracki and her own home bred E Storm Cat bested a field of nineteen horse and rider teams in the $7,500 Aiken Saddlery Welcome 1.35m, presented by Purina.
Kondracki had a total of three mounts in the class and commented, “It was a very technical course, and the lines didn’t ride as I expected with my first two horses. While they weren’t able to do those technicalities on the first day, by the time I rode E Storm Cat as my final ride, we had it down perfectly.”
Eight horse and rider teams advanced to a second-round opportunity with a time allowed set at 44 seconds.
Grant Seger and Fox Lair Performances, LLC’s Istina Van De Kapel FLP were the first horse and rider team to post double clear rounds and their second round time of 33.551 seconds set the time to beat.
Elizabeth Siadous and her own Cartoucen Z followed in the order, but eight jump faults in their second round with a time of 34.226 seconds would see the pair finish in seventh place.
Rosalie Midyette and her own Luigi Van De Kornelishoeve were up next and with back-to-back clear rounds, with a second-round time of 32.749 seconds, took the lead.
Holly Shepherd and Loretta Patterson’s Giovanni Massuere were the next pair to advance to a second round. The pair earned four jump faults and their time of 32.316 seconds and finished fifth overall.
Kondracki and her own Gold Rush VLV advanced to a second-round opportunity and earned four jump and three time faults, placing them sixth overall.
The horse race continued when Shepherd and Loretta Patterson’s CHS Krooze advanced to a second round opportunity. Their fault free time in 31.197 seconds took the lead.
That lead was short lived when Kondracki and E Storm Cat followed in the enviable last to go position.
The pair posted double clear rounds with a second-round time of 29.373 seconds and earned the win, moving Shepherd and CHS Krooze into second place, Midyette and Luigi Van De Kornelishoeve into third, and Seger and Istina Van De Kapel FLP into fourth place.
According to Kondracki, “The time allowed didn’t seem too hard. I’m pretty efficient around turns and my last horse has a big stride, which gave me a nice advantage.”
“Mentally, I wasn’t worried about beathing Holly or anyone else. I just try to have solid, confident rides and I try to be the most accurate everywhere.” She continued, “My last ride with E Storm Cat went really smoothly for me.”
“I’d like to give a massive shout out to my parents,” said Kondracki. “My Mom is an equine repro vet and is back home, holding down the fort for us,” she said. “All of our horses are homebred, and Storm Cat is our first one. My mom transfers embryos from performance mares to surrogates, and we breed, raise and show all of our own home bred horses.”
Emma Irwin and Be Sporthorses, LLC’s Chacothago finished in eighth place.

Red C wins the $1,000 NAL/WIHS Adult Amateur Hunter Classic, presented by Perfect Products

Red C, owned and ridden by Tracey London of Savanah, Georgia won the $1,000 NAL/WIHS Adult Hunter Classic, presented by Perfect Products.
According to London, she has had him for about three years and bought him from Bob Braswell. “Bobby taught me when I was a teenager and then again, as an adult. I reached out to him to see if he had any horses for sale that would suit me. He said he did but mentioned that Ringo [Red C] was just five, turning six. I thought he was too young for me, but he encouraged me to go and see him in Ocala.”
London said, "My father introduced me to his love of horses and riding." Shortly before London went to Ocala, her father died. “I was hardly jumping cross rails when I got down to Bobby’s and had pretty much given up on riding. But Bobby, who has known me since I was a child, encouraged me to get on and ride Ringo.”
The pair clicked immediately. “Buying a horse is always a little stressful,” said London. “I really liked him, but he cost more than I wanted to spend. Then, my mother called me and said, ‘I’ve been thinking about this. Your dad loved horses and I really feel like he would want me to buy this horse for you.” Of course, London was elated.
The rest is history. “Everyone loves Ringo and he has a real fan club. When we picked him up to bring him home, all these ladies were crying that he was leaving,” she said.
“He has a great personality and is such a good boy, all of the time. It’s nice to go into a ring and never need to worry about anything. He is really chill and has no ‘spook’ in him,” London added.
“Even though he can be lazy and likes to eat and nap a lot, when he goes into the ring, it’s showtime. For Ringo, less is more. It’s important to him that we keep the environment fresh, so we typically trail ride and maybe hack out on the polo fields or racetrack. We don’t do a warm up class, we just go into the ring and we will do the occasional derbies just to keep things fresh for him.”
London has been riding with Courtney Goldstein for twenty years. “Courtney has done a great job with him. We have a great team that works with us and everyone comes together to make this really special. I especially want to give Courtney credit for her amazing attention to detail and her ability to design an individualized program for each horse. The horses love her, and she does everything the right way. She is such a calm and patient person, and the horses and riders benefit from her solid personality,” said London.
“We loved showing at the Aiken Summer Classic. I was impressed with the competition. We usually show in Aiken and Wellington, but it was great to see new faces at Bruce’s Field,” she added
Second place was awarded to Party Started, owned and ridden by Tricia Barr of Wellington, Florida, and third went to Dell Kelly of Lexington, Kentucky and her own Balou Label. Roulette, owned by Hannah Sprague and ridden by Zoe Silkwood of Morriston, Florida, finished in fourth and Hand Crafted, owned and ridden by Josie Evans of Covington, Georgia, earned a fifth placing. St. Tropez, owned and ridden by Kayla Mahmood of Cooksville, Maryland, placed sixth.

Ava Robards and Wrozbita
win the $500 Schneider Saddlery
Jr/Am Jumper Classic 1.0 m

Congratulations to Ava Robards of Pittsboro, North Carolina and her own Wrozbita [Waffle] on winning the $500 Schneider Saddlery Jr/Am Jumper Classic 1.0 m among a field of sixteen horse and rider teams.
The pair was second to go in the order and their fault free second round time in 31.729 seconds, set the time to beat.
This was Robards’ first visit to Bruce’s Field and the Aiken Summer Classic and only the second time the pair has shown at 1.0 m.
According to Robards, their partnership started in June of 2023. "Waffle was owned by a friend at the barn who was moving, and we agreed that we would buy him when that time came. Well, I sold my horse Carmen in April and was supposed to start riding Waffle in June. Due to an injury, he went to a rehab barn, and I just began walking and trotting him in October." It wasn’t until January 2024 when Robards would actually be able to ride and show him. “Going through that rehab with him really strengthened our bond,” commented Robards.
Robards continued, "I was showing him in the .75 m, and this was only our second time showing at this height,” she said. “He’s so cool. He turns on a dime and is really adjustable and is one of my all-time favorites. He loves his job,” she added.
Second place horse and rider team, Lourdes Low of Blufton, South Carolina and Neil Taylor’s RC Diego turned in a fault free second round in a time of 32.765 seconds and Katherine Smith of Aiken, South Carolina and Marie Smith’s Supergrover finished in third with a fault free second round in 32.974 seconds.
Maddie Farrell of Aiken, Tennessee and Ludovic Richer’s Charisma Z earned a fourth place and Siena Moore of Roswell, Georgia rode Taylor Horace’s Nala to a fifth place. Sixth was awarded to Ellie Weinreh of Charleston, South Carolina and Nestledown Equine Services, LLC’s Limboy Von Worrenberg. Olivia Lonneman of Charleston, South Carolina and KS Sporthorses, LLC’s Stanley Van De Klunderd placed seventh and Hyde Darby of Suwannee, Georgia rode Avery Moore’s Maple Hill Cappuccino to an eighth placing.
Robards said she had a great time at the Aiken Summer Classic and commented, "I’d like to give a shout out to my trainers, Nick and Emma Stewart at Across Town Farm for all their hard work and patience they have put into me over the years and my dad for supporting this crazy dream that I have.”
