Our 2019 Annual Appeal for Fourth Presbyterian Church and Chicago Lights is underway, giving us opportunity to celebrate the particular ways in which this faith community is committed to actively participating in God s re-creating and reconciling work in this world.

In the days ahead, please prayerfully consider the investment you will make in your Fourth Church family and its work in 2019 and make a pledge by Sunday, October 28 : Commitment Sunday.

While each Sunday we welcome children as part of our worship life at Fourth Church, on the second Sunday of the month—which this Sunday is—we invite their special participation in the 9:30 and 11:00 a.m. services as—

  • We baptize infants and children
  • Sunday School students lead us in worship through the roles of beadle and lay liturgist
  • The Children's Choir sings the Introit at the 11:00 a.m. service
  • Sunday School children take part in the first half of the 9:30 and 11:00 a.m. services

That means that this Sunday, all children who otherwise attend Sunday School on the fourth floor (ages three through fifth grade) should instead stay with their parents as they attend worship . Nursery-aged children (ages two and younger) are welcome in the nursery as usual.

Before the sermon begins, all Sunday School children will be invited to come forward to the front of the Sanctuary for a short liturgical piece before heading off to their regular classrooms. Our teachers will meet them at the front of the Sanctuary and help make sure everyone gets where they need to go after exiting worship.

After worship ends, parents will pick up their children from their fourth floor classroom just like they would on any other Sunday.

A lecture on the current Gallery exhibition about architecture and decor by Howard Van Doren Shaw and Frederic Clay Bartlett —whose work can be seen at Second and Fourth Presbyterian Churches—will be presented by Second Church’s Susan Burian in the Loggia this Sunday, October 14 following the 11:00 a.m. service.

Also this Sunday, a new Academy for Faith and Life adult education class begins at 11:00 a.m. in Room 5G: “ Christian Discipleship and Civic Responsibility: The Impact of Gun Violence.

This three-week course will discuss the impact of gun violence on the city of Chicago, responses to the epidemic on a local and national level, and ways we might be called to respond.

The following Sunday, October 21, another new class will begin at 9:30 a.m.: “Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About the Bible or Your Money Back (A Free Class).”

Led by Rocky Supinger and Matt Helms, this monthly class will mix biblical storytelling, historical context, literary analysis, and small group discussion to help bring the biblical text to life and wrestle with what it means for us today.
