During AAPI Heritage Month, we're celebrating some of the amazing people in the hepatitis B community who share that heritage.
Joan M. Block, RN, BSN, not only co-founded the Hepatitis B Foundation, she is an award-winning advocate for people living with hepatitis B.
Just three years ago, Joan and her husband Dr. Tim Block were the first to receive the new Distinguished Advocacy Service Award from the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD).

U.S. insurance companies removing coverage
for hepatitis B drugs
|
Our team has learned that some people living with hepatitis B in the U.S. recently have received notifications from their insurance provider that their coverage will no longer pay for the drug Vemlidy. Such negative decisions occur regularly, unfortunately, and in some previous instances the Hepatitis B Foundation and our allies have successfully pressured insurance companies to reverse course.
If you currently have a prescription to take Vemlidy for your hepatitis B but have learned that your insurance may no longer cover the cost of this medication, please contact us at info@hepb.org. As always, we will keep your information confidential and anonymous.

A new review article by Lim, et al., published in Viruses reviews the data on early antiviral treatment for hepatitis B, including the impact on disease progression, HCC risk, and economics. The accumulated data suggest that starting treatment early for hepatitis B can save many lives and be cost-effective. The authors suggest treatment strategies to simplify treatment and prevent negative health outcomes.
