March 2024

A Message From the MECHWI Advisory Committee

Dear Maine CHWs and Allies,

Happy March to you all! Spring is right around the corner.

Please read on and see what great work the committees are doing, register for the April CHW Summit, check out the presenters for the next MECHWI meeting and so much more!

March National Nutrition Month! CHWs are connectors, ensuring neighbors are informed about community food resources and linked to essential resources, including SNAP benefits and health insurance guidance. Beyond nutrition, CHWs provide comprehensive health and wellness support, educating on chronic disease management. The market represents a holistic approach to addressing social determinants of health, with CHWs leading community education. Your local food banks and cupboards are a great resource for local fresh produce.

Strategic Plan Updates

MECHWI advisors and staff have created 3 committees to advance the work in the initiative's general strategic plan. Committees have invited new members into the committees who have shown interest in those areas. See below for the updates on the exciting work that is being done!

The committees have launched!

Interested participants that signed up for a committee have receive an email with meeting details and will start the important work on behalf of the Initiative.

Workforce Development Committee

Members reviewed work plan, charter and norms. As part of future meetings, Committee members will develop an action plan.

Policy/Advocacy Committee

Opened to new members at the end of February. During recent meetings, members reviewed the Committee charter, compiled a list of their skills and areas of expertise, and discussed what objectives and activities the Committee will focus on. As part of future meetings, Committee members will develop an action plan.

Communications/Outreach Committee

Members reviewed and revised the final draft of the Maine CHW definition that will be submitted to the state. The definition had been previously created by MECHWI advisors and proposed to the MECHWI members at large earlier this year. Committee members will develop a further action plan.

If you are interested in joining a committee, email Bridgette Gemelli, Capacity Building Coordinator at bgemelli@mcd.org.

TB Conversations: Casting Call for Educational Video Project!

MaineHealth/MMC is looking for actors/actresses to portray two women in a conversation about clinical experiences with tuberculosis (TB) testing and preventive treatment. The actresses will be recorded in a two-part video (two actresses, scenes will be 10 min total). Actresses will be asked to memorize the scripts and will receive compensation at $30/hr of studio time. Actresses should be fluent in the video recorded language and conversational in English.

These videos aim to increase understanding about tuberculosis prevention including TB screening and latent TB among patients and community members. TB is a stigmatized illness in many communities and culturally relevant, language concordant, accurate patient information is lacking. The videos will be recorded in English and in the four most common languages among new Mainers in 2024 (Portuguese, Lingala, French) and will be disseminated in a variety of outlets including before or after clinical visits, through patient portals, and via community health workers and community-based organizations serving the target populations.

Self-Care Tip

Chocolate Lovers!

Researchers say eating dark chocolate can change your brain wave frequency, providing benefits in memory improvement and stress reduction. It’s well-known to most people with a sweet tooth that dark chocolate can be a healthier indulgence. The sweet treat is packed with fiber and antioxidants, which help prevent cell damage from free radicals.

What is self-care? Self-care means taking the time to do things that help you live well and improve both your physical, health, and mental health. When it comes to your mental health, self-care can help you manage stress, lower your risk of illness, and increase your energy. Even small acts of self-care in your daily life can have a big impact.
