Our Path To Christ

Joe '10 and Alli (Day) '11 Hawk’s journey began with a pivotal transfer to Concordia during their sophomore years, a move that opened doors to personalized learning and a faith-infused education, leaving an indelible mark on their lives.

Post-graduation, the couple initially attended Wayne State, with Alli later moving to UNL for theatre studies and Joe completing a Computer Science degree. Joe’s subsequent venture into software development was followed by a return to academia at UNL for a law degree. Reflecting on their college experience, Joe notes, “The rigorous Concordia curriculum set us up for success, making college seem effortless.”

The Hawks fondly remember the fine arts program and the nurturing Christian environment at Concordia, which profoundly shaped their identities. “Our educators at Concordia didn’t just teach; they were embodiments of Christ’s love, nurturing both our academic pursuits and spiritual growth,” Joe reminisces. Their high school years were highlighted by engaging in theatre productions and various competitions, with Lori (Plummer) Dylan, their theatre teacher and One Act coach, continuing to be a guiding influence.

Now, as they eagerly await the birth of their daughter, Joe’s career as a real estate attorney spans Nebraska and Iowa, complemented by his volunteer work with Mustaches for Kids and helping coach the Concordia Mock Trial Team. Alli’s creative flair thrives through her involvement in Nebraska Renaissance Festivals and her role as an assistant coach for the Concordia One Act Team. Together, they cherish their ongoing connection to Concordia, dedicating time to mentorship and enjoying the annual Spring Musical, embodying the spirit of giving back to the community that has given them so much.

Staff Spotlight on Ms. Becky Helmer

Ms. Becky Helmer, a dedicated member of the senior high English department at Concordia Lutheran Schools of Omaha, has been enriching students’ lives for the past two and a half years. Her passion for English is evident, and she tirelessly imparts this subject to her students.

Growing up in a household deeply rooted in faith, Ms. Helmer’s father, a retired Lutheran Pastor, and her mother, a church organist, instilled in her a love for education. In her senior year of high school, she knew she wanted to become a Lutheran educator. She earned her Bachelor’s degree from Concordia University, Seward, and pursued her Master’s in History at the University of Nebraska Kearney.

Before joining Concordia Lutheran Schools of Omaha, Ms. Helmer taught at Concordia Lutheran High School in Tomball, Texas, where she made a significant impact for 11 years. Later, she accepted a call to Trinity Lutheran High School in Seymour, Indiana. In spring 2021, her path led her to Concordia Omaha, where she felt a divine calling to accept the position. Trusting in God’s guidance, she embraced the transition from Indiana to Nebraska.

Concordia Lutheran Schools of Omaha holds a special place in Ms. Helmer’s heart due to its close-knit family atmosphere. The caring relationships among students, staff, and faculty create a supportive environment. She particularly enjoys the Homecoming lip sync competition, where students showcase their creativity.

Additionally, Ms. Helmer, along with Mrs. Rebecca West, initiated a new club called y4life, emphasizing the value of all human life within the Concordia community.

When she’s not immersed in teaching the world’s best literature, Ms. Helmer indulges in her love for travel, reading, and photography. Her dedication to education and her students shines brightly at Concordia, where faith, service, and leadership intersect.
