A Final Letter From Melody McCoy
June 3rd marked the last day of Melody McCoy's tenure as GKII's inaugural Executive Director. In a year and a half, Director McCoy oversaw radical transformation and growth for institute and injected much needed direction and enthusiasm into our team and our mission. She will be sorely missed, but her presence will always be felt. Please read her last message to the GKII community as our director and wish her luck on her next great adventure! 🌹

Making a Difference in Peoples' Lives: Professor Jeffrey Tornheim

“I’ve cared for a lot of patients I’ve been fortunate to sit by and chat with about their disease process, to hear the pain and suffering that comes from the disease, as well as from the toxicity associated with the therapies. I get to see the joy on their faces as they start to feel better and, most importantly, move on with their lives,” Tornheim said.
“It’s a great moment to tell somebody that they’re done with their TB treatments, or to see somebody in their post-treatment follow up and find that this isn’t what they’re worrying about anymore.”

55 students from the Bloomberg School of Public Health visited the United Nations headquarters in New York City on May 14, in a trip organized by the Johns Hopkins Indian Student Association (JHISA) and the Asia Pacific Public Health Network (APPHN) and supported by the BSPH Student Assembly and GKII. They learned firsthand about the organization’s mission to foster peace, security, and development, and how the UN influences global health initiatives and international policy. | |

EducationUSA Chennai's Pre-Departure Orientation program will provide students heading to the U.S. an opportunity to interact with EducationUSA advisers, U.S. university faculty and student alumni. Presentations and interactions will also cover F1 visa regulations while in the United States, pre-travel arrangements, social and cultural integration, campus life, academic expectations and general do's and don’ts. This would be a good opportunity for the students to understand classroom culture in the U.S. and aspects such as plagiarism to gear up for their academic journey in the U.S.

Understanding Dengue and Zika Spread, Immunity and Clinical Outcomes
Deadline: June 25, 2024
This funding call will support multidisciplinary teams to generate evidence on where dengue and Zika viruses co-circulate and investigate the implications this has on host immune responses and clinical outcomes. Research funded through this award will support global efforts to understand and predict the spread of these pathogens, especially where data are limited. Funded projects will also help to design and implement future interventions to reduce dengue and Zika’s growing burden and impact on health.

USAID Integrated Health Systems Strengthening

The purpose of the Integrated Health System Strengthening (IHSS) program is to accelerate countries’ Health System Strengthening (HSS) efforts and achieve sustainable, equitable, and resilient health systems through locally-led, evidence-driven, and context-specific approaches to HSS. The primary goals are to advance primary health care (PHC), accelerate progress toward universal health coverage (UHC), and improve health outcomes.

CFAR HIV/AIDS Training Fellowship Awards
Deadline: July 31, 2024
The CFAR Training Fellowship Awards offer training opportunities for Indian early-stage investigators to expand capacity in HIV/AIDS research through short-term research. CFAR sites are invited to apply for funding focused on priority areas of HIV/AIDS research aligned with NIH NOT-OD-20-018. Two to three fellowship grants, each up to $300,000 USD total cost ($150,000/year), will be awarded.

AIIS Fellowship Competition
Deadline: Nov. 15, 2024
The American Institute of Indian Studies has announced its 2024 fellowship competition and invites applications from scholars who wish to conduct their research in India. Junior fellowships are awarded to Ph.D. candidates to conduct research for their dissertations in India for up to eleven months. Senior fellowships are awarded to scholars who hold the Ph.D. degree for up to nine months of research in India. AIIS welcomes applicants from a wide variety of disciplines, especially encourages applicants in fields from Development Studies, Natural Resources Management, Public Health, and Regional Planning.

Housed in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, the Center for Infectious Diseases in India (CIDI) is seeking a Sr. Research Program Manager to be part of a team with a base in Baltimore and locations across India.
