St. Louis Catholic School Newsletter

November 17, 2022

Dear St. Louis Families,

We lost a good friend this week—Mrs. Kim Doering, one of our original preschool teachers (Panda class) and a parent of two St. Louis graduates, passed away from cancer. The loss of her reminds us about the importance of friendship and gratitude. We are grateful that Mrs. Doering is at peace; we are grateful that Mrs. Doering lived life fully with zeal; and we are grateful for the many positive connections she made with so many students, parents, and staff—we feel her loss deeply. Mrs. Doering offered us a treasured gift of friendship.  Her love for each of us was immeasurable---I share this with you because Fr. Thompson, in his homily at Mass yesterday, told the students that we are given a gift at our baptism, a gift of God’s love. He said that it is our duty to decide how we are going to share God’s love with others throughout our lifetime; how we connect with others, build relationships with others, and are a friend to others is one way that we can share that gift of love, helping us be true disciples. I just found it providential that almost right after Mass, we received the sad news of Mrs. Doering’s passing. I hope that you can build on Fr. Thompson’s message with your own children at your dinner tables—it is a beautiful way to help them live our mission to love, learn, and lead others to Christ.

Next week, we have two virtual days of instruction on Monday and Tuesday for K-8 students. Teachers will be sharing schedules, and the work will be a combination of synchronous and asynchronous each day beginning with a homeroom prayer at 8am. Teachers will take attendance in that morning homeroom time. Devices will be sent home with students who need one—please let your child’s teacher know if your child will need a device to work from home next week. Students are responsible for taking good care of those devices while away from school. Some of the days may be used for students to catch up on trimester missing work/assignments. Know that our first trimester ends on Tuesday.

When we return to school Tuesday, November 29th we will be starting our 2nd trimester—report cards for T1 will come home Friday, December 2nd in student folders. December will go fast with a flurry of seasonal activities and learning. We have some great events planned like the Christmas lights tour and Lessons and Carols for grades K-5. There is a lot of information to share and important reminders about health, carline and the colder weather--- this newsletter is long, please take a moment to carefully read through it all and bookmark for reference.

In this month of gratitude, we have so much to be thankful for and many blessings. I am most thankful for family, good friends, and our wonderful Hawk community that bring joy each day!

Have a blessed weekend!

Peace,

Anne Dyke

Principal

School Announcements

PLEASE READ: CARPOOL REMINDERS

  1. Unless parents are going to be coming into the building for a meeting with their child, they need to use the carpool drop-off line. No one is allowed to just drop their kids off and let them run across the parking lot.
  2. Middle school students need to wait to exit the car in the morning until the parent has pulled to the middle school driveway. Students are not to get out of their cars into the grass next to middle school, even if they are late.
  3. Pull all the way to the front of the line - which is the front cone, not the awning or school sign regardless of whether you arrive early.
  4. Everyone is in a hurry and trying to get to work, so please be patient. The speed limit is 5 mph through the entire parking lot, including after your child has exited the car.

Sibling Priority Applications for 2023-24 Due December 1st!

If you have a child who will be joining us in K-8 or preschool next year, be sure to submit the application online by December 1st for priority consideration and placement.

The K-8 application packet may be found here.

The Preschool application may be found here.

The weather changed quickly on us. Students will go outside for recess daily (weather permitting). Please send students in with proper outside attire to include jacket, gloves, and hats. St. Louis fleeces, PE sweatshirts, and spirit wear are not sufficient for extended times outdoors during recess. Students who do not have a coat will not be able to go outside. I do have a couple of extra coats, but I am limited in what sizes I have. If anyone has any winter gear that they would like to donate to the clinic that would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your continued support. I hope you all have a healthy and safe Thanksgiving.

November 29- December 9

For Giving Tuesday Spark, the Student Council will be collecting used Barbies and Matchbox Cars for Mattel PlayBack.

Collection boxes will be available in each homeroom from November 29-December 9. Make room for Santa and bring in a Barbie or Matchbox car in any used condition. It's ok if Barbie has had a visit to the "home salon" or is missing a limb, and if your car has been up on blocks. Please do not purchase dolls and cars to donate.

Giving Tuesday Spark is an opportunity for kids to do good. As it coincides with the Annual Fund's Giving Tree Appeal, students are encouraged to participate in the spirit of giving alongside their parents, and it provides an opportunity to give somethingback that is tangible and relatable to them.

Mattel PlayBack is a toy recycling program that is designed to recover and reuse valuable materials found in the toys for future Mattel products, keeping toys out of the landfill.

Now that all the Running with the Hawks contributions have been counted, we are thrilled to report that, thanks to your generosity, we grossed more than $90,000! We look forward to all the ways that we can now support our teachers, our students, and our school. In the meantime, thank YOU! Congratulations to Mrs. Brewer’s 4th graders (4-3) for raising the most money of all our classrooms during the Hawk-a-thon! As promised, they enjoyed a special visit from a Game Truck this week – so much fun!

CYO & Extracurricular

St. Louis CYO Spirit Wear

The CYO Team is opening the winter offering of Spirit Wear for order. The t-shirts are sanctioned for wearing on PE days with the rest of the gym uniform, and kids need not be on any CYO team to buy and wear one. There are shirts specific to basketball and cheerleading, a generic Hawks shirt not specific to any team, and there is a performance wear t-shirt that track team members should buy, but anyone can purchase any one of these shirts and show your Hawks spirit. There are also hoodies and sweatpants available with all the logos, and they can be worn as outerwear going to and from school but CANNOT be worn as part of the school uniform during the day.

Spirit wear can be ordered directly from Sew n’ Luv, a local independent business, at this link: https://www.sewnluv.com/st-louis. This site will be open from November 11th through November 27th. The deadline will NOT be extended. CYO will deliver spirit wear about 2-3 weeks later. If you have any questions about your order, please contact the CYO team at saintlouiscyo@gmail.com
