Toronto set to begin critical rehabilitation work on Gardiner Expressway


The City of Toronto announced that on Monday, March 25, lane restrictions will begin on the Gardiner Expressway between Dufferin Street and Strachan Avenue for critical rehabilitation work on the more than 60 year old route that is reaching its end of service life. This is the next phase of the City of Toronto’s Gardiner Expressway Strategic Rehabilitation Plan.

CCA National Safety Award 2023: Graham Honoured


The Canadian Construction Association (CCA) has honoured Graham with the prestigious 2023 CCA National Safety Award. Graham prioritizes an integrated management system approach concerning Health and Safety, Environment, and Quality. We support industry-leading prevention of serious injuries and fatalities (SIF) through initiatives like the Hurt and Energy model, the Construction Safety Research Alliance research (as founding members), our Actively Caring culture initiative, and Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) principles.

Stantec to provide environmental consulting services for Crawford Nickel project


Canada Nickel Company has selected Stantec to provide professional environmental consulting services for the Crawford Nickel Project, located north of Timmins. The critical minerals project, expected to be one of the largest nickel sulfide operations in the world, will help deliver the nickel and cobalt required to power the electric vehicle market.


Stantec will prepare an Impact Statement, class environmental assessments (Class EAs), and the supporting technical studies to assess project impacts, identify mitigation measures, and confirm follow-up programs for the project.

Ontario Association of Architects announces 2024 Design Excellence Awards finalists


The Ontario Association of Architects (OAA) announced the 20 Finalists for its 2024 Design Excellence Awards. Chosen by a jury of respected design experts, this year’s collection features a diverse range of building types, including sustainably designed community centres, schools and learning facilities, residences, and an indoor horticultural attraction, as well as performing arts venues in Sudbury and New York City. These 20 Finalists serve as the shortlist for the OAA’s Design Excellence Awards category; the 10 winners will be announced next month and honoured at the OAA Conference in Niagara Falls in May.

Cooper acquires Action


Cooper Equipment Rentals Limited, a Canadian-owned and operated construction equipment rental company, has completed its purchase of Red Deer, Alberta-based Action Equipment Rentals Inc.


Formed in 1991 by Reginald Bloomfield and his father Ray Bloomfield in Sundre Alberta, Action serves the Central Alberta Market. The company consolidated its operations in Red Deer in 2015 and, under the leadership of general manager Gabriel Castella-Chin, embarked on an ambitious plan to renew the rental fleet and grow their market share.

Fraser says up-zoning has changed planning landscape


Canada’s minister of housing, infrastructure and communities says the government’s Housing Accelerator Fund has produced a transformation in Canada’s residential zoning regulations in only six months. The government has signed 179 agreements with municipalities over the past half year for Accelerator Fund money, Fraser told delegates attending a Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation conference in Ottawa March 18. That will lead to the creation of more than 750,000 permitted new homes across Canada over the next decade, the ministry forecasts.

Ontario builders, workers plan safety blitz for eclipse


Ontario contractors and workers are preparing for the April 8 total solar eclipse with information outreach, job hazard analysis and plans for toolbox talks as the day approaches.


A recent meeting of the Ontario General Contractors Association Safety Advisory Committee included a review of safety plans for the event given its potential harm to eyes and also distractions.
