NORTHWAY WEEKLY UPDATE | Week of Dec 1

This Sunday: Lessons & Carols

Scripture: Genesis 3:8-15

Join us On Campus or Online | Sunday, December 4 at 10:30 am

"Sing we now of Christmas..." Well, sort of. The cultural calendar, and even our own hearts, urge us on to sing and celebrate the birth of Christ. AND, our faith also reminds us to honor the journey of gestation - the season of waiting (often in darkness) as things grow in ways only God can know. So, yes, we will sing of Christmas this Sunday in worship as the music department, under Leanne's leadership, presents our Lessons and Carols service. Even so, let's try to remember

to hold space for the quiet work of the Holy Spirit. Who knows what new thing God might birth in us. See you Sunday.

A Note from the Ministry Team

Advent leading into Christmas is my favorite time of year. In planning for the Cantata Sunday or Lessons and Carols annually, I look through many music scores to find something that I feel fits Northway for that year. I generally lean towards individual pieces or collections of songs that retell the Christmas story, hopefully by beginning with an Advent message. Although we don’t have this particular aspect this year, I usually always try to incorporate or find a Cantata that includes congregational singing of carols. Singing our faith is an integral part of our communal worship, and this Sunday, when we light the candle of peace, we will be singing O Come, O Come, Emmanuel, where the last verse is:

O come, Desire of nations, bind all peoples in one heart and mind;

bid envy, strife and quarrels cease; fill the whole world with heaven’s peace.

We will conclude by singing Let There Be Peace on Earth for our Invitational Hymn uniting us by reminding us to be peace so we can share that with others.

The Lessons and Carols will be our morning message in song and scripture. The instrumentation is unusual but beautiful for an Advent/Christmas music Sunday.

We will hear Sungyun on the organ, Bethany Padgett on flute, Laura Logan Brandenburg on harp, and Donna Schmidt on oboe. There are seven songs and six scriptural readings. The first song is This is the Truth (I) and the closing song is

This is the Truth (II). The first words you will hear are, “This is the truth sent from above, the truth of God, the god of love. Therefore don’t turn me from the door, but hearken all, both rich and poor.” and the final words you will hear are, “God grant to all within this place true saving faith, God grant to all within this place, that special grace which to his people doth belong: and thus I close my Christmas song.”

Blessings!

This Sunday we will give thanks to God for the gift that Sungyun has been to our worship ministry, as well as the gift his wife Euna and son Hajun have been to the congregation. There will be a cookie reception at the welcome area following the morning worship service. You are invited to bring tokens of your appreciation and prayers for their journey in the form of cards, a love offering, or other expressions. We will also have blank cards available at the reception.

The choir will celebrate Sungyun and his family at their Christmas Party later that afternoon. We are excited for them as they move to Arkansas where Sungyun has accepted a new full time music ministry position.

Hospitality Ministry Needs Your Help

The Hospitality Ministry is looking for a few good folks to help with our Holy Grounds Coffee Fellowship on Sunday mornings. Setting up the service and preparing the coffee is not hard, but does need someone to setup and put away.

Working with a partner, to share the responsibility, makes it easier. We would welcome early risers to help setup and folks to help with cleanup and put away.

If you feel like this is something you could help us with on occasion, please talk to

Liz Hermann at (214) 403-4900 or at lizhermann@tx.rr.com. By the way, you don’t have to be a coffee drinker yourself! We have tea and hot chocolate too!!

Breakfast with Santa & A Conversation with St. Nicholas
