A Win-Win Year of Impact: SCYP Salem

As the academic year draws to a close, the Sustainable City Year Program (SCYP) is deeply grateful for our year-long partnership with the City of Salem. Students across four University of Oregon schools and colleges from over 20 courses worked on projects to help implement the City of Salem’s climate action plan and equity goals. Check out the SCYP Salem final compilation report for highlights of the year. Final reports from each class will continue to be posted on Scholars Bank.

Thank you to all the faculty who offered their expertise and students who engaged in real hands-on projects to create long-term impacts for the City of Salem!

SCYP Partnership Announcement

SCYP matches community identified project needs with the exceptional brainpower of students and faculty to find solutions. This year is a special one as federal funding through Congressionally Directed Spending and the US Department of Education will allow SCYP to partner with multiple communities to leverage and strengthen city capacity to reach goals outlined in the state's Climate-Friendly and Equitable Community rules.

Interested in teaching with SCYP next year? Check out the SCYP Faculty Guide or contact us to chat more about your class needs. Staff is working to secure additional project-based community partners based on faculty interest.

The City of Oakridge

A two-year partnership will focus on high priority projects identified by the City Council and the Oakridge community such as: the Oakridge Industrial Park marketing and development, Willamette Activity Center planning and outreach, city website improvements, urban renewal opportunities and research, housing development planning and design, community service program options, and affordable GIS alternatives.

The City of Bend

The City of Bend will partner with SCYP Community and Regional Planning graduate students to apply contemporary land use planning and urban design concepts to help transition a traditional, auto-centric neighborhood into an area with a mix of residential and commercial uses that is climate resilient, equitable and includes infrastructure that facilitates active transportation.
