A Note from the Admin Office

The Board of Library Trustees has completed negotiations with Tom O’Connell, and an employment agreement was formally signed at the beginning of May! Tom will be starting on Monday, June 3, as Grafton’s new Library Director. We look forward to having him on board, and hope the patrons of the Library will stop by to say hello and welcome Tom to Town.

The hiring process has continued for two open positions. Interviews are scheduled for our open Reference Librarian position, which will hopefully be filled shortly. The Library will also be restarting its search for a Department Administrator.

Building Update

Work on the Cupola Restoration Project continues when the weather allows for crews to be on-site. Our Contractor will be meeting with our Preservation Consultant to ensure that the paint used in the project is accurate to the original Cupola and maintains its historic nature.

The flood remediation project in the Children’s Room has unfortunately continued to stall due to issues with the carpet installation process. The Board of Library Trustees will be discussing this issue at their meeting on May 22. Work should restart shortly after a decision is made on how to handle the current situation. If members of the public have questions about the status of this project, we encourage you to reach out to the Assistant Town Administrator, William Blake at blakew@grafton-ma.gov or by filling out a form on the town website.

Nonfiction Spotlight

Following Atticus: Forty-eight High Peaks, One Little Dog, and an Extraordinary Friendship

By Tom Ryan

After a close friend died of cancer, middle-aged, overweight, acrophobic newspaperman Tom Ryan decided to pay tribute to her in a most unorthodox manner. Ryan and his friend, miniature schnauzer Atticus M. Finch, would attempt to climb all forty-eight of New Hampshire’s four-thousand-foot peaks twice in one winter while raising money for charity. It was an adventure of a lifetime, leading them across hundreds of miles and deep into an enchanting but dangerous winter wonderland. At the heart of the amazing journey was the extraordinary relationship they shared, one that blurred the line between man and dog.

Following Atticus is an unforgettable true saga of adventure, friendship, and the unlikeliest of family, as one remarkable animal opens the eyes and heart of a tough-as-nails newspaperman to the world’s beauty and its possibilities.
