4/27 BOE Mtg. Recap

Dear Friend of CCSD93,

Messages From

Superintendent Hill:

CCSD93’s Board of Education is composed of seven elected officials who devote significant time, effort and energy, without compensation, to determining the priorities for our school district, including decisions on policy, budget and leadership.

As a result of the April 4, 2023 election, CCSD93 welcomed five new Board members to be seated at last night’s Board of Education meeting. I want to take a moment to thank our departing Board members and welcome those incoming.

Thank You, Outgoing Board Members!

On behalf of the CCSD93, I express my deepest gratitude to our five outgoing Board members for their commitment to our community. Each brought a unique and valuable perspective and worked diligently in the best interests of students. They devoted dozens, hundreds and in some cases thousands of hours of personal time preparing for and participating in Board and various committee meetings.

Sonal Amin joined the Board in August 2013. In her years on the Board, Mrs. Amin served on the Facilities Committee, Boundaries Committee, Expect Respect Task Force, Dual Language Planning Committee, Stratford Innovation Center/STEM Lab Design Committee, Negotiations Committee, Cloverdale Innovation Center Design Committee, District Leadership Team and represented District 93 on the PEP Foundation Board. Thank you, Mrs. Amin!

Clay Elmore became a Board member in 2015. Mr. Elmore served on the Stratford Middle School Innovation Center/STEM Lab Design Committee, District Learning Team, Equity & Excellence Committee, Co-Curricular Committee, Board Policy Customization Committee, and attended Bloomingdale Intergovernmental Meetings. He most recently served as Board Vice President. Thank you, Mr. Elmore!

Rogelio Orozco served on District 93’s Board of Education from 2015 to 2017 and from 2019 to 2023. Mr. Orozco served on the Diversity Committee, the Western Trails Innovation Center Design Committee, and the Equity & Excellence Committee. Thank you, Mr. Orozco!

Elise Houswerth joined the Board in 2021. Elise served on the Finance Committee and the District Learning Team. Thank you, Mrs. Houswerth!

Jasper Vaiana became a Board member in 2022. Thank you, Mr. Vaiana!

Welcome, Incoming Board Members!

Welcome Mr. Bastian, Mrs. Davia, Ms. Groves, Mr. Payton and Mrs. Williams! All are members of our community with children in our schools. I look forward to each bringing their experiences and viewpoints to the Board as we continue to strive to maximize the academic, social and emotional potential of each CCSD93 student.

Arbor Day Tree Planted With Village of Carol Stream at Heritage Lakes

Today is Arbor Day, and to honor it, Heritage Lakes Elementary School collaborated with the Village of Carol Stream to plant a ceremonial maple tree on the school's grounds near its playground today!

I was thrilled to join select students, Principal Yelaska, Carol Stream and DuPage County officials, and Mayor Frank Saverino for the planting. The students were excited to learn that the tree is one of 100 that have been planted by Carol Stream this year and is one of 8,000 under their direct care.

Moana Jr. Coming to Jay Stream 4/28 & 4/29

Join us tonight and tomorrow, April 28 and 29, at Jay Stream Middle School for their production of Moana Jr. I can’t wait to check out the students’ hard work!

Please review the following for more information from CCSD93 and have a terrific weekend.

Sincerely,

Dr. David H. Hill

Superintendent of Schools

D93's Elementary Band & Orchestra Programs Perform, Recruitment Begins for Next Year

Last week, CCSD93’s Elementary Orchestra programs played spring concerts at their future middle schools, and this week, the 5th Grade Beginning Band held their spring concerts! For Band, it was the second concert of the year for the 130 5th graders in the program. The group played “Popcorn Prelude” where students popped out of their seats like popcorn and the theme from Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony “Ode to Joy''. Congratulations to all the performers!

This week and next, the district’s 3rd and 4th graders visited their future middle schools to see Jay Stream and Stratford’s Orchestra and Band programs in action. The elementary students are getting to learn more about the programs, which they can begin participating in next year.

During the next two weeks, CCSD93’s Orchestra Directors will visit the district’s 3rd graders to try out string instruments they might like to play next year, while the district’s Band Directors will visit 4th graders to test out band instruments. Here are the dates that parents can expect their child to be visited during the school day. Students should come ready with any questions!

Cloverdale Dual Language Students Celebrate Día del Niño

April 30 is Dia Del Niño, or Day of the Child, an annual celebration throughout Mexico that recognizes children and their importance to society. Today, Cloverdale’s Dual Language classrooms celebrated by engaging in traditional Mexican crafts and games, including making piñata bags, playing lotería and pirinola, drawing Mesoamerican serpent deity Kukulkan, folding and cutting tissue paper to create festive papel picado, and listening to Spanish music while making abanico fans!

Heritage Lakes Students Participate in The Great Penguin Fling!

Tuesday was World Penguin Day. Heritage Lakes 5th graders celebrated with the Great Penguin Fling, a project aligned to grade level engineering standards that called upon them to design, build, test and modify devices to propel a stuffed version of this typically earthbound bird to fly the farthest! Check out this video for more!
