Dear Colleagues,
This is the final week of school in many places, and the past year is already in the rearview mirror for many others. Into summer we go! The thought of summer vacation ideally conjures childhood pictures of lazy days, playing with friends, swimming, exploring, building forts, camps, and being able to greet each day as an expansive new adventure. We hope for elements of these childhood memories for each one of you and for all of our students. We hold a vision for rest and renewal for you after a busy, intense, productive year. May there be many moments of just being - with self, family, loved ones, friends, and the world of nature - and less doing. (Of course, we also hope for a period of rich, supportive professional development for all as part of that renewal!)
We know that, for many of our students, the end of the school year is far from idyllic, but marks a time of uncertainty and transition. At its most straightforward, they may have said goodbye to a familiar setting and reassuring, beloved adults as they prepare to change schools or teachers next year. Perhaps progressing from kindergarten to grades, entering middle school or high school. For others, the end of the year really highlights the many ways schools and educators support and nurture, providing regular routines, safety, nutritious and regular food, the care of loving and attentive adults, and the daily challenge of learning and growing in a secure environment. Many of our schools continue to demonstrate the essential roles they play in students’ lives through summer meal programs, day camps, and enrichment programs. We know that, unfortunately, some of our students will not be so fortunate and they will long for a return to school and to your care. May all of our students be safe this summer. May we together envision a time of continuity of support, safety, and support for every child, and the gifts of a true summer experience for all.
From the Alliance, thank you again for all you do and have done to hold each student safe, nurtured, and regarded in the highest light. Please know that your work is deeply valued and impactful.
We will take a pause on our E-news until late August. Our regular leadership Zoom sessions are also on a summer pause. We will use this summer time for our online professional development (see information here), for a full update of our self-study process, and for preparation for what promises to be a busy Fall. Plus, for the possibility of inspiration and renewal that comes from summer slumber.
Wishing every one of you a summer of outbreath and renewal,
Liz Beaven
