Download the 2015 Association Communications Benchmarking Report
Thank you to those who participated in this year's study. Your participation is invaluable to helping us develop this comprehensive set of communication benchmarks.
The goal of this study is to create a tool to help you recognize the strengths and opportunities in your own communications program, and then optimize your efforts so you can spend more time on what works and less time on what doesn't.
This year's research suggests that while associations are making great strides in their fight for member engagement, they still struggle greatly with content relevancy, communication integration and using data advantageously to learn more about their members. And while staffing has increased slightly, it does not seem to be increasing sufficiently to handle the ever-increasing communication workload at today's association.
Here are a few stats worth mentioning:
- 58% of this year's respondents believe members read less than half (50%) of the information the association sends to them. Although there is clearly more work to be done, this is an improvement over 2014, when 70% of respondents surveyed indicated they felt half (50%) of communications were being ignored.
- Nearly two-thirds of respondents (64.6%) believe that engagement with their communications would increase if they really understood the types of content members expect.
- Associations are communicating more frequently through social media than any other communication channel, yet roughly one-third of respondents report they are still trying to formulate their social media strategy (32.5%).
- Only 6.3% of associations report that their communications are fully integrated, and 5.5% of respondents view their communications as best in class.
- 41.7% of associations feel understaffed overall; 43.5% feel their publishing/content creation teams are understaffed and 43.6% feel their social media teams are understaffed.
The report also contains the 10 Top Recommendations for executives and their staff.

Discussions
Fundraising resource for associations
"Fundraiser resources for associations are being posted and are open to all to use freely. The idea is for us to have discussions and share fundraising models, samples, best practices and tools as they relate to Association Foundation Fundraising."
Trade shows--Be aware
"For those of you who do trade shows, please see this post that came to my email. Sharing for awareness, not to be an alarmist. I run a public show so this could pertain to us. A representative from a Pakistani hunting knives company had contacted me for a booth in my Fishing and Hunting Show over the summer. The company had a great website and references from other shows overseas. Not thinking much of it and having had international exhibitors in the past at various events, I sold him a booth."
Board advocacy
"Does anyone have or know of guidelines, templates or questions regarding a board of directors supporting or opposing issues related to their mission? I am involved with a new association that is struggling with how to or not to take a stand on issues relating to their purpose and scope of work. Any ideas are appreciated."

Wilderness Resort to add two Room Escapes by D.O.A.
Wilderness Resort is adding two Room Escapes by D.O.A. to their Wilderness on the Lake property.
Room escapes offer an interactive, real-life, mind-intensive experience. Up to 12 people will be locked in a room and will have 60 minutes to strategize as a team to decipher clues, decrypt codes, and interpret riddles to escape. They will need to examine visual props to unlock a series of padlocks of which, the ultimate lock, will hold the "key" to the participants' freedom.
The two Room Escapes by D.O.A., The Hotel and The Basement, will build upon a series of real-life incidents that occurred during the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. The Hotel will feature a recreation of its lobby and will be integrated with clues and puzzles to help the visitors find their way out! The Basement will be designed to inspire a mindset of urgency and confusion as participants navigate the layered twists of the room while spontaneous audio, visual, and animated objects will invade their senses.
"Overall the escape rooms won't feel claustrophobic or as creepy as one might expect," says Chris Ebben, Attractions Director for Wilderness Resort. "The vibe will be a fun, intimate environment where you work closely with your whole team, learning and using each other's strengths."

Fox Cities Exhibition Center moving forward
Construction could begin by next summer on a new Fox Cities Exhibition Center. The project will be built behind the Radisson Paper Valley Hotel, and will include including a sky walk that will connect the exhibition center and the hotel. The owners of the hotel will operate the exhibition center.
The project is expected to generate an average of $6.5 million in new visitor spending to the Fox Cities each year. "We are excited about the opportunities the exhibition center will give our staff to sell the area to even more meeting and convention planners," said Pam Seidl, Executive Director of the Fox Cities Convention and Visitors Bureau. "This is a project that the Bureau's customers have asked about for years and we are pleased that our local municipalities have come together in a regional approach to make it a reality."
Seidl says the exhibition center, coupled with the additional room tax being allocated to the Bureau's Tourism Development Fund for sports facilities, makes it a very exciting time for tourism in the Fox Cities.

2015 Wisconsin Act 117 Campaign Finance Legislation On December 16, 2015, Wisconsin Act 117 ("Act 117") was signed into law. It repeals and recreates chapter 11 of the Wisconsin statutes, effective January 1, 2016. Separate legislation enacted on the same day (2015 Wisconsin Act 118) dissolves the Government Accountability Board ("G.A.B.") and replaces it with two independent commissions: the Ethics Commission which will administer and oversee campaign finance (chapter 11), lobbying (subchapter III of chapter 13) and ethics laws (subchapter III of chapter 19) and the Elections Commission which will administer and oversee election administration laws (chapters 5 through 10 and 12 of the statutes).
