USDA raises 2022 animal protein production forecast

Higher beef, broiler, and turkey forecasts partly offset lower pork production in Q4 2022, leading USDA to raise the forecast for 2022 red meat and poultry production to 107.53 billion lbs. in the December “World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates” report.

USDA raised the 2022 beef production forecast to 28.42 billion pounds (lbs.) due to higher expected cattle slaughter as well as heavier carcass weights. Pork production, however, was lowered to 27.06 billion lbs. due to lighter carcass weights. Broiler and turkey production were raised to 46.10 billion lbs. and 5.21 billion lbs., respectively, on current slaughter and hatchery data. Read more

National food insecurity remains unchanged heading into the holidays

Fairly stark regional differences about food spending emerged last month among surveyed U.S. consumers. However, similarities in food values also appear at the regional level, both according to the newly released Consumer Food Insights Report.

The survey-based report out of Purdue University's Center for Food Demand Analysis and Sustainability assesses food spending, consumer satisfaction and values, support of agricultural and food policies, and trust in information sources. This month's report looked closely at how respondents answered survey questions based on their geographic region. Read more

CoBank: U.S. economic forecast darkens for 2023

The U.S. economy still has considerable momentum and is not currently on the verge of recession. However, economists have never been more pessimistic and there are very legitimate reasons for concern. Over the past half century, inflation above 5% has never been tamed without incurring a recession. That portends a painful, yet necessary chain of events will unfold in 2023, according to a comprehensive year-ahead outlook report from CoBank’s Knowledge Exchange.

“As financial conditions continue to tighten, we expect the U.S. economy will steadily soften through the first half of 2023, ushering in a brief, modest recession,” said Dan Kowalski, vice president of CoBank’s Knowledge Exchange. “The unemployment rate could rise as high as 5%, indirectly leading to a decline in consumer spending. Without this softening in the labor market and the associated slowing of wage gains and spending, it will be difficult to stabilize prices.” Read more

JDS Communications is now indexed in PubMed

JDS Communications is now being indexed by the national database PubMed. Editor-in-Chief Matt Lucy, PhD, stressed the significance of this development: “Indexing in PubMed is an important step for new journals and demonstrates the confidence that the US National Library of Medicine has in our journal, including its publishers, editors, editorial board, and authors.”

PubMed is a free resource maintained by the National Center for Biotechnology Information and the National Library of Medicine. The database indexes journals primarily in biomedicine and related life sciences fields and contains abstracts and citations, usually with links to the full text. Indexing improves the accessibility of an article by allowing researchers to search PubMed for a specific topic. This increase in visibility can lead to more citations for an article. "Our authors’ work will be hosted along with 34 million other citations in PubMed, one of the largest searchable databases for biomedical literature,” said Lucy. “We anticipate that indexing in PubMed will increase the number of citations for articles published in JDS Communications. The increase in citation rate will drive our impact factor, which will bring more authors to our journal.” (MORE)

New Scientific Publishing Webinar for Authors

A completed scientific manuscript represents an extraordinary effort and investment by its authors. This webinar will discuss the attributes of the ADSA ecosystem of journals, namely, the Journal of Dairy Science and JDS Communications. A “side-door view” of many of the activities involved in scholarly publishing will be shared. Geared for all, but especially for early-career scientists, this webinar will also discuss and outline several ways authors can highlight the impact and overall influence of their own individual published works. Participants will also have an opportunity to ask Paul Kononoff, Editor in Chief of the Journal of Dairy Science, questions related to these and other topics.
