Dear Rondout Families, Faculty and Friends,

Special Seniors Day was a huge success. We had a wonderful turnout and all of us were thrilled to be able to bring back this Rondout tradition. Thanks to the PTSA and all the volunteers as well as our special seniors who were our honored guests today. Thanks also to the teachers who planned the experience for our special seniors.

Don’t forget about the band concert this coming week on Thursday May 4th at 6:30 p.m. and the Rondout Arts Night on May 18th from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. All families are invited to attend both events. Students will be able to take home their art portfolio on Arts Night with their work from the year.

This year we are implementing a new plan for supporting our students over the summer. Learning loss over the summer is always a concern for all students but just as we work to personalize the educational experience for each student during the school year, we are piloting a new process for personalizing summer learning for each student based on need and family situations. We are gathering suggestions from our faculty about the areas that would be helpful for students. Ms. Davis and I will be checking in with each family to discuss their plans for the summer and potential summer activities to minimize learning loss that are manageable for them. Families can sign up at the link below. We will provide families with a copy of the plan after our discussions. We hope this personalized approach will result in a meaningful and manageable plan for the summer.

The microwave at lunch returns next week. Now that we are able to move past the COVID protocols, we will be bringing our lunchroom microwave out of storage and back in action. Students may utilize the microwave for items brought from home that need a simple reheat. We ask that students bring their items to reheat in microwaveable containers and limit the reheating time to two minutes to allow for the shared access among students.

During our parent coffee on April 19, 2023, we focused on the topic of school safety and security. One area that parents indicated that they found extremely helpful was related to the protocols for what is called reunification. This is what happens after a crisis when parents will be picking up students who have been relocated for their safety. As we discussed, there is a process in place which includes notification of parents regarding when and where students may be picked up, the need for parents or guardians to provide identification before their child will be released to them, the role that law enforcement will play in directing the “reunification process” and the reasons why we ask that students not contact parents via cellphone during a crisis for safety and security reasons. The location and processes may be altered based on the details of the situation. Please feel free to reach out if you would like to learn more about the reunification protocols in place. Based on the interest expressed by the families who participated, we plan to host a coffee annually to share updates regarding school safety and the role that parents play in support of maintaining their child’s safety here at school. As always safety is our first and foremost area of focus.

Have a wonderful weekend and a great week ahead.

Until next time... Take care...
