INTRODUCING MAX DOWDLE:
THE ARTIST BEHIND OUR
UPCOMING ART BANNER!

The Exterior Art Banner committee is thrilled to announce the selection of Max Dowdle as the artist who will create the artwork for the 30 x 12-foot banner approved by the church 1½ years ago. The banner will be installed on the wall facing McDowell Street.

Max has worked professionally as an artist for over 20 years. He graduated from the College of Charleston and later studied and taught art in Florence, Italy. Over the last several years, Max has concentrated his efforts on public art. He has painted murals on public buildings in Raleigh, Apex, Chapel Hill, Durham, and his hometown of Hillsborough. You can view select works at NCPUBLICART.com. Earlier this year, Max completed a massive 66 x 40-foot mural in Morehead City for the UNC Institute of Marine Sciences (seen below).

The committee has conveyed to Max our wish to have the art banner communicate a sense of community both within and outside the church. We are confident the finished artwork will show the joy of who we are as a community bubbling over and spilling out to those who pass by.

Max will speak to the church later this year once he has completed the artwork. He will share with us the images the art is conveying and what inspired his creation. The committee’s goal is to have the banner installed by December 31.
SAVE THE DATE FOR OUR CHURCHWIDE SPRING RETREAT!

We are changing locations for our churchwide spring retreat from the beach to the mountains! We hope you will mark your calendar for April 1416, 2023, and join us at the Blue Ridge Assembly in Black Mountain. Our church has made accommodations to rent the entire Blue Ridge Center, which includes hotel-style accommodations, a dining hall, a gorgeous chapel, and plenty of gathering space. Rooms are handicap accessible and there is elevator access to all floors. In our free time, you’ll be able to enjoy hiking trails, disc golf, basketball, volleyball, tennis, corn hole, and gaga ball! More logistical details on cost, theme, and overall schedule for the weekend are coming soon.
NORTH CAROLINA STATE MISSIONS OFFERING

Our NC Mission Offering helps fund non-profit organizations doing work and providing services primarily in North Carolina. Through the generosity of FBC members, we have already received $1,462 toward our goal of $10,000. The following organizations will receive our offering:

Baptists on Mission Disaster Relief is currently serving Hurricane Ian survivors in some of the worst hit parts of Florida. Manna One feeding unit (30,000 meals per day capacity) is set up and providing meals in Cape Coral, Florida. Feeding, recovery, shower/laundry, logistics, safety, Medical Reserve Corp, communications, admin and chaplaincy are all currently working.

Baptist Children’s Homes of North Carolina (BCH) was born in 1885 with the Thomasville Orphanage and later the Kennedy Home in Kinston in 1914. Today, BCH as a nonprofit in 21 statewide locations has added a variety of services to offer help and hope to children, families, single mothers, college students, intellectually/developmentally disabled adults, and aging adults.

Baptist Retirement Homes is a faith-based, not-for-profit organization with a 70-year legacy of excellence to provide older adults with a second-to-none senior living experience rooted in our core values — honesty, fairness, compassion, cooperation, dependability, humor, kindness, loyalty, patience, and conscientiousness.

Baptist Hospital (Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist) touches the lives of so many from the smallest child to aging adults. As a nonprofit healthcare organization, it provides the highest quality compassionate care, conducts lifesaving research, and offers leading-edge medical education as well as patient assistance with medical bills.

Thank you for your gifts and prayers for this offering.
Nancy Moore Phillips, WMU Director

TOY JOY VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Though we were still able to serve our guests the last two years by having their gifts pre-packaged and delivered in our parking lot, we're excited to invite the parents into the building to shop for their children's gifts again! The event will be held on Saturday, November 12. We plan to have a morning session and an afternoon session so you may choose to work one or both times. All volunteers as well as guests must wear masks while in the building. For safety's sake, we will also limit the number of people in the Fellowship Hall at one time. We ask that all volunteers inside the building be no younger than middle school-age students. Parents of three-year-olds through fifth graders can work with their children in a hospitality area outside the building serving drinks and cookies to our guests as they finish shopping.

This Sign-up Genius link gives you the option of signing up for the morning session and/or the afternoon session. If you speak Spanish and can serve as a translator, or need to have a job that doesn't require you to be on your feet most of the time, please indicate that in the comments. We'll assign you to a specific job and let you know what you'll be doing a few days before the event. There is also a need for volunteers on November 11 to help set up and that information will be on the Sign-up Genius as well.

The Toy Joy team is looking forward to your help this year as we work together to serve the children who will receive the Christmas presents that have been donated for them. If you have any questions, please email or call Anne Cooke (mobile: 919-986-9465 or home: 919-782-7491)

DEACON ELECTIONS

Per the bylaws, the election of deacons will take place during the month of October. Ballots will be available each Sunday and each member may vote for up to eight men and eight women. Ballots are in the library, the Gathering Room, the narthex, and at the Throne; you may also obtain an electronic version below. The box for ballots will be on the long counter in the library. If you choose to mail yours in, please do so well before the end of the month. On Sunday, October 30, the tellers appointed by the Chair will gather to count the ballots, and the Chair and Vice-Chair will then notify those selected.

Please see the attached deacon election ballot for a current list of deacons
and their spouses who are not eligible based on the bylaws,
as well as others who have asked not to be considered for election.

Please give thoughtful and prayerful consideration as you participate in the deacon election process.

CROP WALK—OUR
OCTOBER MISSION PROJECT!

For years, FBC has participated in the local CROP Hunger Walk. Funds raised support these local agencies: Catholic Parish Outreach Dorcas Ministries, Food Bank of Central and Eastern NC, North Raleigh Ministries, and Urban Ministries of Wake County. In addition, global efforts are supported through the work of the Church World Service, which has a huge refugee ministry and works locally with the Welcome House. There has never been a greater need as each of these agencies is stretched beyond belief to address hunger insecurity as we come out of the pandemic but face rising food costs. Support our October mission project and the CROP Walk by either donating or walking . . . or BOTH!

The Greater Triangle Area CROP Hunger Walk starts and ends at Pullen Park, on Sunday, October 30. Registration/sign in is at 2pm with the Walk beginning at 3pm. You may register and join our team here. You may also donate on that page or through the FBC electronic options. If you prefer to write a check you may make it out to FBC and write CROP Walk in the memo and place in the offering plate or mail to the Financial Administrator FBC. 99 N. Salisbury, Raleigh. NC 27603.

A fun activity for children and adults as well is to use the CROP Walk Calendar of Blessings found here. As you count your blessings each during the month you are encouraged to set aside an amount of money for each blessing and then donate to the CROP Walk at the end of the month.

Registering makes it easier for our team leaders to contact you with supportive emails and to distribute information you may share to increase your fundraising for CROP. One very effective fundraising tool is to post a Facebook fundraiser with just a few clicks on your personal page (established when you register). Facebook charges CROP no fees on the money raised through the Facebook platform

CENTERPOINT

The theme for Centerpoint this fall is Communicating Faithfully in a Divided World. Our society is divided on a number of issues and contemporary culture pressures us constantly to join in ideological battles between polarized positions. How can we communicate our values faithfully on things that matter and engage in genuine dialogue with people of differing convictions without either avoiding important issues or being drawn into acrimonious disputes? During October and early November, we will hear from speakers who will provide resources for faithful communication and dialogue.

For the next two Wednesdays, October 12 and 19, Dr. Chris Chapman will lead a two-week program entitled “Creating Safe Space for Challenging Conversations.” The program is based on work Dr. Chapman has done with faculty and practitioners in the field of pastoral care to nurture a healthier environment for civil discourse in congregations and faith communities.
