☢️Radon Update - We need your help!🫁

We’re thrilled to share some exciting updates from NB Lung regarding our ongoing efforts to combat radon in New Brunswick.

First, we’re delighted to announce that our Radon Lending Program has expanded with the purchase of 18 new radon monitors. These devices play a crucial role in our initiative, which sees us partnering with libraries, MLA offices, and realtors across the province. Learn more about the program and participating partners on our website.

In February, the NB Lung team travelled to Saint Andrews for a Community Radon Testing Drive, where residents had the opportunity to receive a free long-term radon test kit. Those kits are now ready to be sent to the RPC Lab in Fredericton! Participants can drop off their completed kits at the Saint Andrews municipal office (212 Water Street) between June 3 and June 14, from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday to Friday.

In another significant development, on May 15th, Green MLA Megan Mitton tabled a motion in the New Brunswick Legislature calling on the government to allocate funding for radon testing and mitigation supports across the province. This motion is crucial for the health and safety of all New Brunswickers, but it requires public support to become a reality.

Here’s where you can make a difference: Visit our website to access our "find your MLA" tool and a pre-written letter expressing your support for the motion. Your voice matters, and together, we can urge policymakers to prioritize preventing radon-induced lung cancer in our province.

🔥Wildfires, Woodsmoke, and Your Health🌲

As we enter another wildfire season, it’s essential to reflect on the challenges and lessons learned from previous years. In 2023, Canada faced its worst wildfire season in history, showing the urgent need for preparedness in the face of this natural threat.

As wildfires can have far-reaching effects on air quality, it’s crucial to monitor local air quality while wildfires are burning in western provinces. Residents of New Brunswick can access the Air Quality Health Index to stay informed about air quality conditions in their area.

To stay informed about wildfire activity across the country, Natural Resources Canada’s Interactive Fire Map is an invaluable resource. This interactive tool provides real-time updates on active wildfires, fire danger ratings, and other critical information to help communities stay ahead of potential risks.

At NB Lung, we understand the significant health risks posed by wildfires and wood smoke. On our website, you can find information on what to do before, during, and after a wildfire, as well as resources highlighting the harmful effects of wood smoke on human health.

We encourage everyone to take proactive measures to safeguard their health and well-being during wildfire season.
