The stunning news last week was a change in Adobe's Terms of Service for Creative Cloud. The key phrase - to which you are required to consent in order to use any Adobe Creative Cloud software - is that users "grant [Adobe] a ‘non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free sublicensable, license, to use, reproduce, publicly display, distribute, modify, create derivative works based on, publicly perform, and translate the Content.'” (Where "the Content" is your media and projects.)

Whoa! Does this mean we just lost all control of our projects? Adobe's new Terms and the industry fallout are my lead story.

Apple WWDC keynote is coming in a few hours. Fasten your seat belt. Change is back in style.

I'm on the road this week and next, visiting family in Wisconsin. So, my newsletter has fewer tutorials than usual. I'll catch up when I get home.

In the news:

Cinegear Expo opened for three days ending yesterday in Los Angeles. I've always enjoyed this show. Where else can you see this combination of outrageous production gear - from cameras to camera cars, and everything else needed to create movie magic.

Blackmagic Design announced Blackmagic Cloud Sync, a new feature of Blackmagic Cloud storage that allows a camera to sync media into a DaVinci Resolve bin while the camera is recording. Within seconds the editors can see media arriving in real time and start editing, even while the camera continues to record.

DPA Microphones has a fascinating - and short - tutorial on how mic placement affects voice quality. This is especially good to know for performers. The article takes 2-3 minutes to read - but I learned two key facts that will improve my audio recordings.

While green-screen removal is still the main industry workhorse for removing backgrounds, other virtual production techniques are growing in popularity. This includes new LED volumes and video walls. In this guest post, author Margo Chesley take a closer look at virtual production.

In a few hours, depending upon when you read this, Apple will redefine our industry... again. All the rumors point to major AI announcements at this year's WWDC, but simply announcing some new AI technology doesn't address key issues such as: The source materials are used for large language model training, protecting creative copyrights, protecting individual privacy and avoiding AI tech that goes off the rails providing inaccurate, insensitive, or incongruous results. AI is only useful if we can trust it.

All too often the tech industry decides it's time to "disrupt" an industry, without giving thought to the impact of that disruption. "Just because we can" is no longer a good enough reason for social change - especially when the results of this change are so potentially destructive. Yup, consider me a skeptic, but AI needs to prove it can be trusted before I feel comfortable adopting it for any but the most basic tasks. I'm very curious to see if and how Apple can avoid these landmines.

Until next Monday, stay healthy, stay safe and edit well.
