Developed through a partnership between the Manufacturing Skill Standards Council (MSSC) and the Material Handling Equipment Distributors Association (MHEDA), the Certified Forklift Technician (CFT) program is a nationally portable, industry-led, hands-on training and assessment certification program that prepares individuals with in-demand skills to maintain, service, and repair forklift trucks. Administration to Create National Recognition Program for Institutions that Increase Economic Mobility



Last month, Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona announced that the Department of Education will develop a new Postsecondary Student Success Recognition Program to uplift

higher ed institutions that support student success. Read the announcement here.


Status of American Rescue Plan Act Funds in your Community


The Department of Treasury has a dashboard where you can find the status of funds from the American Rescue Plan’s State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds (SLFRF) program. SLFRF funds are being used in many ways, including supporting and expanding the workforce. The Department of Treasury’s dashboard reflects your state or locality’s remaining funds as of Sept. 30, 2023 and can be found here.

invaluable role of community colleges in shaping the education landscape and empowering

DOL Announces Funding for Career Training Services


The Department of Labor announced $49.2 in available funds for career training services in the Appalachian, Lower Mississippi Delta and Northern Border regions. This is part of the Workforce Opportunity for Rural Communities (WORC) Initiative. Read the announcement here.



NYT Report: A German Initiative to Keep Workers Employed by Retraining Them


With an evolving industrial landscape, German companies like Continental are being prompted to create retraining programs for their employees. The Alliance for Opportunity, formed by Continental and 70 other companies, aims to equip workers with necessary skills and certifications for new jobs, addressing both job cuts and labor shortages. Supported by substantial funding from the government, this initiative is helping to facilitate training programs and ensure a smoother transition for displaced workers. Read the report here.



Maximizing Access & Success for Special Populations and Underrepresented Learners in CTE 


Advance CTE and the Association for Career Technical Education (ACTE) have developed the

third brief in the series that focuses on learner groups that, while not named as special

populations under the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act (Perkins V), may

benefit from strategies to close access and success gaps including, Justice-involved learners, LGBTQ+ learners, Migrant and undocumented learners and Tribal learners. Each brief provides helpful definitions, dedicated strategies, and guiding questions to evaluate current practice and identify next steps regardless of your system’s current level of support. A new report highlights how industry partnerships benefit rural learners and employers alike – and shines a light on the rich variety of rural contexts, state systems, investments, and policies that can help drive and sustain effective partnerships between rural community colleges and local industry. Learn about how rural industry partnerships create place-based pathways and opportunity, the key factors that make for strong, effective partnerships, and how state and local policymakers, officials, and administrators can support rural community college and industry partnerships.
