Coastal Mountains Nature Program walk

Geology of Sears Island

Saturday, October 8

2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Sears Island, Searsport

Coastal Mountains Nature Program, in partnership with Friends of Sears Island, presents Geology of Sears Island on Saturday, October 8 from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. at Sears Island in Searsport. The popular Coastal Mountains Nature Program is a series of monthly naturalist-led walks and talks exploring the natural history of Mid-Coast Maine.

Dr. Steve Norton, Professor Emeritus of Earth and Climate Sciences at the University of Maine, will lead us on an exploration of the past 350 million years of Mid-Coast geological history by exploring the rocks and sediment of Sears Island. This walk is timed to take advantage of low tide, exposing the shoreline of the island.  Meet at the entrance to Sears Island at the end of the causeway in Searsport.

DIRECTIONS

From downtown Searsport, drive 2 miles northeast on Route 1 to Sears Island Road (which will be on the right if driving from the town of Searsport). Continue on Sears Island Road across the causeway to the island. Park on the causeway.

Hunting is allowed on the island so participants are suggested to wear hunter orange.

The Latest from Learning Landscapes

We are continuing our support for educators at Camden-Rockport Elementary and Middle School as well as Searsport Middle and High School. Teachers are increasingly incorporating outdoor learning into their everyday teaching schedule.

We are in the steady process of creating a network of volunteers, deepening our collaborations with other outdoor and student-centered organizations, creating training and outdoor learning backpacks, and starting an evaluation process for Learning Landscapes.

We have outdoor classroom and land protection projects underway, as we work to provide access to natural spaces for all children in our service region.

Local Mountain Bike - Land Trust Partnership Revamps Goose River Trails

The Goose River Mountain Bike Trail Network in Camden and Rockport, will be receiving quite a bit of love in the coming weeks thanks to a partnership between Coastal Mountains Land Trust, the Mid-Coast chapter of the New England Mountain Bike Association (McNEMBA), and Sidecountry Trails. The three organizations are working together to design, build, and improve a beginner and family friendly mountain bike loop on this new section of the Ragged Mountain Preserve. Parking for the trail network is currently at the Camden Snowbowl.

Rick Bresnahan generously donated 96 acres for the trail network in 2021. Video of trail building below.
