Symposium on Storytelling Coming Oct. 11-12
The Fall Symposium on Storytelling, co-hosted by EHS and CSHEMA, takes place Oct. 11-12 at Frist Campus Center. The symposium brings together safety experts from around the country and includes the following featured speakers from Princeton:
  • Brad Snyder (keynote), paralympic swimmer and triathlete, retired US Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Officer and Princeton PhD candidate
  • Kelly States, Associate Director, Campus Safety, Princeton EHS
  • Joan Hutzly, Laboratory Safety Specialist, Princeton EHS
  • Shaundree Davis, Assistant Director, Environmental Health, Princeton EHS
  • Jim Sturdivant, Sr. Communications Specialist, Princeton EHS

Robin Izzo and Dr. Pablo Debenedetti will welcome the keynote speaker on Oct. 12.
The Fall Symposium on Storytelling explores the science, art and power of storytelling with relation to environmental health and safety and risk management programs on campuses.
Special Rate for the Princeton University Community
Students, faculty and staff at Princeton can attend both days of the symposium at a special rate of $99 by using the promo code StuFall22. In addition, limited free reserve seating for certain talks and sessions will be available: email ehs@princeton.edu for more information.
Sa[Fest] Keynote Address: Brad Snyder
The safety leadership keynote address at the Fall Symposium on Storytelling will be live-streamed on Wednesday, Oct. 12 at 10:45 a.m.

The safety leadership lecture will be presented by Brad Snyder, Paralympic swimmer and triathlete, world record holder, retired US Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Officer, and Princeton PhD candidate.
Brad sustained complete vision loss while serving in Operation Enduring Freedom. He is also a fellow in the Stockdale Center for Ethical Leadership at the United States Naval Academy.

This event will kick off EHS’s Sa[Fest] series of research-safety events that will be presented throughout the year across all of campus.

The stream will be accessible via the Media Central Public Channel 7.
Speaking of Stories... EHS Launches a Podcast
EHS Stories explores some of the fascinating incidents, characters and projects—from baffling discoveries and hazardous happenings to a bona-fide murder mystery—that have shaped our office, and Princeton University, over the last 50 years.

In Episode 1, "Room 225: Uncovering a Decades-Old Danger," we talk to Sue Dupre, health physicist at Princeton from the 1970s through her retirement in 2017, about how she put together historical clues to literally unearth a remnant from the early Atomic Age.
Staff Profiles: Emergency Preparedness
EHS this summer welcomed our newest staff member—Kelly Tinsman—to the Emergency Preparedness team!

The Emergency Preparedness team at EHS works closely with Public Safety to plan for and mitigate incidents impacting the University community and coordinate a response when emergency situations do occur.
Roof Use Policy Reminder
University policy prohibits the use of roofs on campus for personal or social purposes. This is done because of the obvious hazard of falls, as well as the possibility of roof damage.

Some roofs may be used for research and teaching with prior approval by contacting Jamie McQuaid of Environmental Health & Safety at extension 8-5106 or via e-mail at jmcquaid@princeton.edu and Chris Machusak of the Maintenance Department at extension 8-6607.
Violations of this policy are reported as follows: for undergraduate students, to ODUS; for graduate students, to the Dean of the Graduate School; and for all others, to the Chair or Head of the appropriate department. All individuals in violation of this policy are subject to the University’s disciplinary process.

The full text of this policy may be found at: https://ehs.princeton.edu/roof-safety
