Dozeman-Buchanan Class Continues at 9:30 a.m.
"Full!" described the classroom for last week's adult education discussion on "Suffering and Hope in Second Isaiah" led by Tom Dozeman and John Buchanan.
 
So this week we're moving the class down to Borwell Dining Room to give everyone some more room--and make space for any of you who weren't there last week but would like to join us this Sunday.
 
All are invited to join in this exploration of how Isaiah 40-66 helps us engage themes of suffering and hope.

Conversation about The Cost of Discipleship
Popular Academy for Faith and Life instructor--and Assistant Professor of Christian Ethics at McCormick Theological Seminary--Reggie Williams returns this Sunday, January 15 to lead us in a three-week discussion of the classic work The Cost of Discipleship by Dietrich Bonhoeffer.
 
Reggie will guide us in engaging this thought-provoking book as we examine its particular theological relevance for our time. Come take part in the conversation at 11:00 a.m. in Room 5G.

With Head and Heart: An Autobiography
Join Judy Watt this Tuesday for a survey of the life of Howard Thurman--recognized as one of the great religious leaders of the twentieth century--as we spend an evening discussing his autobiography: With Head and Heart.
 
This book conversation is part of a monthly series led by pastors and staff of Fourth Church. The books, which are available at the Book Nook during Coffee Hour, are chosen individually by the staff and are presented as a way to more deeply dive into the theological topics and conversations in our world.
 
Come for just the books that interest you, or broaden your reading horizons and join us for them all!

threeDoris Kearns Goodwin: January Series
Lunch-Hour Lectures from Calvin College
World-renowned presidential historian and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Doris Kearns Goodwin will be the lecturer for Tuesday's "January Series" presentation live-streamed from Calvin College to more than fifty remote webcast locations (among them, Fourth Church).
 
"How Did We Get Here? A Historical Perspective on Our Wild 2016 Election" will be the topic of her Tuesday presentation.

You can watch it for free in the Page Smith Room at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday--where you can also watch the remainder of the week's free lunch-hour lectures.
 
Please note that there will be no live stream at Fourth Church on Monday, January 16, as our campus will be closed so that our staff might observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

A Popular Event Returns!
One of Women at Fourth's most popular events last year returns again this year as their January gathering: the jewelry swap!

All women are invited to start the new year with this opportunity to make new friends--and to clean out their accessories drawers . . . plus add some fun things to them.

Each participant is asked to bring a donation of jewelry or accessories they no longer use (a limit of five pieces, please, and no clothing items).

Those items will then be available to other attendees for $2 per item. All proceeds will go to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance.

Please also bring a snack item to share at what promises to be a great evening of fun and fellowship!

A Gathering for Those Fifty and Over
"Christian Meditation and Centering Prayer" will be the topic of a presentation by Nanette Sawyer when Cornerstones next gathers on Friday evening, February 3.
 
This fellowship opportunity for those fifty and over will also include dinner in Borwell Dining Room.

sixGet to Know the Selah Freedom Project
An Introduction Hosted by the Sunlight Project
Later this month our Sunlight Project will host a Selah Freedom Volunteer Connect Meeting to introduce us to this group that works to end sex trafficking and will soon be opening a home for survivors near Chicago.

On Saturday morning, January 28 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., representatives from Selah Freedom Project will be on hand to talk about how to volunteer with them. They will also explain various opportunities they have for individuals to make a difference in the lives of survivors.

An Invitation to a Conversation

The Presbytery of Chicago invites you to explore that question with fellow Presbyterians, community partners, civic leaders, friends, and family during one of the presbytery's World Caf é conversations.

Last week we did just that here at Fourth Church. This week we will be doing it again--on Wednesday afternoon and Thursday evening--so as many people as possible have an opportunity to take part in a discussion.

A Saturday Morning Retreat at the Church
