Bring a Friend to Church This Sunday
St. Giles' Choir Singing in Worship
garage Bring a Friend to Church This Sunday
Celebrating Welcome and Community
"Comforted and challenged by the Gospel of Christ," says the Fourth Presbyterian Church mission statement, "we strive to be a welcoming, serving community."

This Sunday we will left up that commitment to welcome that is inspired by the radical hospitality of Jesus Christ--a commitment that extends from welcoming all to reaching out to one another to build connections and community.

Why not bring a friend to worship this Sunday as a further extension of this welcoming commitment!

Visiting from Edinburgh, Scotland
We are honored and delighted to have with us this Sunday the Choir of St. Giles' Cathedral from Edinburgh, Scotland.

They presented a wonderful Friday Noonday Concert today and on Sunday will sing at both the 9:30 and 11:00 a.m. services, beginning with the prelude.

Last summer our touring choir had the privilege of singing at St. Giles', where our former Executive Associate Pastor Calum MacLeod is Minister.

Another Summer of Urban Youth Mission
Each summer our Urban Youth Mission (UYM) program hosts visiting youth groups from across the country who come to spend a week with us immersed in service and learning about urban mission and ministry.

The visiting groups stay overnight at the church and spend their days engaging in both learning and hands-on outreach experiences at the church and in the city.

Guiding them are Fourth Church staff member Katie Patterson and the four summer staff members we will commission this Sunday: Jay Collier, Daisy Jones, Alejandro Salas, and Elena van Stee.

Please join us in welcoming them--and the first three youth groups who will be this with us this summer. Arriving this Sunday, June 18 for their UYM week are groups from Broad Street Presbyterian Church of Columbus, Ohio; First Presbyterian Church of Granville, Ohio; and St. Charles Presbyterian Church of St. Charles, Missouri. Welcome!

threeSpeakers from Cuba and Palestine
Events Hosted by World Mission
The World Mission and Social Justice Committee will be hosting two speakers in the week ahead and invites you to come learn from them.

On Tuesday, June 20, Ofelia Ortega, a theologian from Cuba, will talk with us about "Changes in Cuba and the Church's Response." Join us at 6:00 p.m. in Anderson Hall this Tuesday as Dr. Ortega, the first Presbyterian woman to be ordained in Cuba (in 1967)--who was also the former Principal of the Evangelical Theological Seminary of Matanzas and is currently a President of the World Council of Churches for Latin America and the Caribbean--shares her experiences and perspectives.

Then next Sunday, June 25, Estephan Salameh will speak about the progress of the Palestinians in terms of institution building and unity. Join us at 12:15 p.m. in Room 4F on June 25 as Dr. Salameh, who earned his doctorate in urban planning and public policy from UIC and is currently the policy advisor to the prime minister of Palestine, talks with us about the development of economic strategies in Palestine and about the Seraj Library Project he cofounded with his wife to provide library space and family-oriented programs in underserved Palestinian villages.

graduatesNew Ordinary Time Paraments
Banners and a Communion Table Cloth
We return to the liturgical season of Ordinary Time this Sunday, and to mark the season we have new Sanctuary banners and and a new cloth for the Communion table.

The new Sanctuary banners are based on seven statements attributed to Jesus Christ in the Gospel according to John. In them Jesus declares "I am the Resurrection and the Life; the Bread of Life; the Light of the World; the Gate; the Good Shepherd; the Way, the Truth, and the Life; and the Vine."

Associate Pastor Vicky Curtiss designed and created the banners. She also wrote prayers to go with each one, prayers you can find in the literature racks in a brochure about the banners.

A new cloth for the Communion table was begun last Sunday, when worshipers at the Jazz at Four service placed their hands on a piece of fabric and traced around them. This week these handprints from members of this worshiping community were painted different shades of green--the liturgical color of Ordinary Time--symbolizing growth and change. We look forward to using this cloth at our weekly 4:00 jazz Communion service.

cookoutThanks for the Snacks!
Supporting Meals Ministry
The Fourth Church Meals Ministry steering team--and the guests they serve--are grateful to everyone who contributed to the recent Snacks for Sacks drive. More than 4,500 individually wrapped snack items were received, enough to fill some 1,500 sacks--which means more than five weeks' worth of lunches!

Of course, hunger doesn't stop, and neither does the challenge of filling some 300 sack lunches each week with a total of 900 snack items. Donations of snacks--granola bars, pretzel packs, applesauce cups, or the like--are always needed and can be dropped off, marked "Snacks for Sacks," at the reception desk.

Thank you!
