CEC Approves $2.9 Billion for ZEV Infrastructure Over Four Years
  • $1.7 billion for medium- and heavy-duty ZEV infrastructure.
  • $900 million for light-duty EV charging infrastructure.
  • $118 million for ZEV manufacturing.
  • $90 million for hydrogen refueling infrastructure.
  • $97 million for emerging opportunities such as aviation, locomotive, marine vessels and vehicle-grid integration.
  • $15 million zero- and near-zero-carbon fuel production and supply.
  • $15 million for low-carbon fuels.
  • $10 million for workforce development.

EPA Regulations for Heavy-Duty Vehicles
The US EPA has passed aggressive regulations for heavy-duty vehicle NOx and PM emissions beginning in 2027, and is developing zero-emission regulations for heavy-duty vehicles that will also begin in 2027.

DOE Advanced Vehicle Technology Funding
The DOE has announced plans to fund a number of vehicle technologies in 2023 including: 
  • Reduction of weight and cost of batteries,
  • Reduction in life cycle emissions of advanced lightweight materials,
  • Reduced costs and advanced technologies for on- and off-road vehicle charging and infrastructure,
  • Innovative public transit solutions,
  • Training to increase deployment of these technologies among diverse communities.

UC Davis EcoCar Challenge Team Car
The Lyriq, one of the top five contenders for the “Green Car Reports Best Car to Buy in 2023” is the EV platform being used by the UC Davis EcoCar Challenge Team. The Lyriq began deliveries in Q3 of 2022, and is GM’s first mass-production vehicle using their Ultium drivetrain system that has been under development for a decade.

Ford Increases Lightning Base Price
Ford is being forced to raise the base price of the Lightning by 9%. This is the second price hike in three months, as Ford, along with Tesla and Rivian, try to keep up with rapidly rising prices of the necessary raw materials like lithium.

Chevy Bolt Customer Protection Recall
A range of Bolt EVs from 2017 to 2023 model years are being recalled due to the chance of fires but not related to the battery packs. GM has determined that there is a potential for seat belt mechanisms that react in microseconds during accidents, to potentially contact carpeting with extremely hot gasses and on very rare occasions, cause interior fires.

JP Morgan’s CEO, Jamie Dimon, has observed that the world’s energy needs will require natural gas and oil for the foreseeable future.

EV Cold (and Hot) Weather Performance
EVs performance will degrade significantly if the battery packs and power electronics are not kept in a narrow temperature range, typically 75 to 95 degrees. An effective Battery Thermal Management System is essential for BEV performance to be maximized.

Tesla Model 3, Nissan Leaf, Kia EV6
Most Reliable EVs
Consumer Reports has surveyed hundreds of thousands of vehicle owners and determined that the Tesla Model 3 and the Nissan Leaf have the longest records of excellent reliability. The Kia EV6 has ranked even more trouble-free than either the Tesla or the Nissan, but does not have the track record length to be officially given that position yet.

NEL Signs 16 Station Hydrogen Deal
International hydrogen production company NEL has signed a deal with an undisclosed US energy company to deliver 16 hydrogen fueling stations in the US, with delivery to begin in Q4 2023 and run through 2024.

Nikola Truck and Hydrogen Agreement with Plug Power
Phoenix-based Nikola Motor Company will sell Plug Power 75 Tre fuel cell Class 8 trucks and Plug Power will provide Nikola with a 30 ton per day hydrogen liquefaction system for the Nikola hydrogen hub on Interstate 10 in Buckeye, Arizona.

Regional Hydrogen Hub Joins Arizona, Nevada, and the Navajo Nation
A collaboration of Arizona, Nevada and the Navajo Nation will develop a regional clean hydrogen hub located at the Center for an Arizona Carbon Neutral Economy in Tempe, Arizona.

Postal Service EV Commitment


The US Postal Service will acquire 66,000 BEVs by 2028, budgeting $9.6B to complete the purchases.

CARB Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) Credits-$68.00
Carbon Intensity (CI) Developments 
  • GEVO to Produce Negative CI SAF: GEVO is designing a facility to produce Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) that they claim will have a CI of negative 3.5. They achieve negative carbon by employing five deep-decarbonization strategies: renewable hydrogen, renewable electricity, renewable heat sources, carbon capture and sustainable and precision farming practices for feedstock production.
