Hello Newsletter Readers!
It has been an incredibly busy summer so far and we are ready to head into fall. In my last newsletter article (in June!), I talked about our Education Coordinators who help us manage our national program. Last month, we all got together for our annual Education Coordinator Retreat. We spend three days talking, planning, strategizing, and getting in some great peer-to-peer learning opportunities.
This year we met in Michigan on the campus of Michigan State University. It was a beautiful location for us to spend time on our plans for the remainder of 2022 and into 2023. We discussed new ways to recruit Mentors and Apprentices, brainstormed ideas for offering more resources to our Mentors, and learned from each other how to best perform our Education Coordinator role for DGA.
Routinely, our ECs tell us how much they love the time together to talk and get to know each other better. They also come away from the retreat feeling refreshed and excited with new ideas on how to manage their DGA region or state.
We also were introduced to our new Learning Management System (LMS) that will host our MGIC related instruction classes. We saw a demonstration on how the system works and how it will expand our ability to offer not only our classes, but other Mentor resources and additional classes in topic areas we hope our Apprentices will enjoy. Most people don’t know that our related instruction classes and the new offerings are open to the public. Anyone who is interested in learning more about managed grazing dairy can take our classes. We also offer a Managed Grazing Dairy Certificate for anyone who completes our core classes.
Back home from the retreat, I am compiling the notes from discussions and creating a Mentor survey that will be going out to our DGA Mentors. This survey will help us identify the resources that would be most valuable to our Mentor farmers. As a group we came up with a list of ideas and the survey will help us know if we are on the right track. If you are a Mentor farmer in the DGA program, please watch for the survey and take 5 minutes to fill it out. We want to offer you resources that you fine useful, so your input it critical in deciding the topics.
Thank you to all our ECs for participating in the retreat and for all you do in your work for DGA!
