Welcome to The Spartan Sentinel, our monthly electronic newsletter for all things DePaul Catholic.
Moving Forward
Thanks For The Memories!

The 1980s Social Studies Department was populated by a crew of semi-legendary Spartans. Well, at least we thought we were semi legendary.

The 80s were the decade of Ronald Reagan, high hair, loud rock and roll and, as always, kids being kids. It was quite a decade to be in education. There was a jukebox in the cafeteria. I remember Journey playing on the jukebox, over and over again. One of our students even won a high hair contest that was held at the shore. It was quite an accomplishment, and I believe, a lot of hairspray. I believe all the hairspray used in the 1980s was the beginning of Climate Change.

This is a quick update about some of the past members of the Social Studies Department.

My role in the 80s was Chairman of the Department. I also supervised the graduation, was the senior class moderator and was a football assistant coach and track coach. I still supervise the graduation. It's always a great thrill to watch the kids graduate.

Coach Lennon is now a member of the Advancement Office after many years as baseball coach, football coach and Athletic Director. The baseball field behind DePaul bears his name. Coach was also an expert on the Civil War and loved teaching about it.

Coach Tom Lamont taught senior history with me for 12 years and coached football and baseball. He moved on to Caldwell High School and retired this year from teaching after leading his football team to an 11-0 record and the state championships. DePaul /Caldwell football games were legendary.

Coach John Struck '83 taught history and psychology and coached football and track. John moved in the early 90s to teach and coach at Morris Hills High School. John retired this year as one of the finest track coaches in New Jersey High School history. Each Spring our track team would have a practice meet with Morris Hills. It was the first time some of our kids even saw a real track. I always appreciated Coach Struck taking it easy on us.

Coach Jerry Fazzio taught World History and was the Freshman football coach, the Wrestling Coach and Girls Track Coach. Coach Faz left about 15 years ago and is now the Principal at Lafayette school in Sussex County. Rumor has it is that if the kids misbehave they must eat lunch with Coach Fazzio!

There were many more great social studies teachers who followed and taught and coached and sacrificed their time to help high school kids. Names like Sadie McHugh (retired) Vince Puccio (now a lawyer) Dr. Chris Angelillo (a Superintendent of Schools in Morris County), Coleen Henry (Communications Director at Pingry), Michelle Eilbacher (mother of 3, who continues to be involved in education in South Jersey).

I know I left some folks out, but it is safe to say the following...

Sometimes you don’t know what you have until it's gone. When these and other folks moved on they left behind a legacy of excellence and sacrifice that we will always remember and be grateful for.

Today, every teacher at DePaul continues to pursue excellence and is always willing to sacrifice for the kids. They assist the kids in building their own memories about attending DePaul.

The Lord continues to bless us with great educators and good people at DePaul.

Thanks to all, past and present. The kids need you more than ever .
Principal's Message
Dear DePaul Catholic High School Community:

October is here and we have completed the first month of the school year…I asked the students, “With 10% of the school year completed, have you accomplished 10% of your goals? If not, what are you doing about that?”
The month of September is always exciting as we start a new school year...a very successful Back to School Night and the celebration of the Feast of St. Vincent DePaul.

Junior Class rings are on sale and we are scheduling a ring ceremony to be held just prior to the Semi Formal in February. Mrs. Haggerty, the Junior Class Advisor, is taking the lead on this project.

A very successful Open House was held on October 16 with many applications for the Class of 2027 already in hand. We will be hosting the HSPT exam on November 11 and this will be a virtual school day for all students so that we can accommodate those taking the exam.

The Senior Class will observe the time-honored tradition of celebrating Halloween on Monday, October 31. This is an anticipated senior privilege that is well deserved by this Senior Class.

On Tuesday, November 1, His Excellency Kevin Sweeney, Bishop of Paterson, will be the celebrant of our All Saints Day Mass. The mass will begin at 9:45 AM and all are invited to attend this mass. We ask that you not enter the building until after 9:30 AM and that you do not park in the front oval…please use the parking lot.

As always, we welcome you as our partner in this educational process…an open line of communication with the classroom teachers is the most effective tool in our educational toolbox. Please continue to monitor Power School so that you can track your student’s progress and we look forward to seeing you around campus.

St. Vincent DePaul, Pray for Us!
Girls Soccer - Passaic County Champs!
Congratulations to the Girls Varsity Soccer Team on their 2-0 victory over Wayne Valley on Saturday.
On Friday Night, Anthony Almeida '23 was selected as DePaul Catholic's nomination for The NJ Super Football Conference Steve Degregorio Man of the Year Award.

Congratulations Anthony!
School & College Counseling Corner
We are well into the 2022-23 school year and Fall is in full swing. This time of the year is busy for our DePaul Catholic students and our School Counseling Department with many things happening and even more upcoming.

Our 8th, 9th, 10th, and 11th graders have all taken the College Board PSAT test that was appropriate to their grade level. Those scores will be available in early December. These tests are important for several reasons including exposure to the College Board testing format for the SAT’s they will take as Juniors and Seniors as well as to assist the Counselors in their advice and course selections for the students.

In September we had our College Planning and Financial Aid presentation and in October we will be hosting an Information Night for the underclassmen as well. We encourage all of you to spread the word and attend these valuable information sessions.

The Seniors are in full swing with their college applications that are due at various times throughout the Fall and Winter. Our DePaul students are well prepared for the rigors of college and we are confident that each Senior will land at the college that is the best fit for them. We eagerly anticipate all of the decisions that will be arriving in the coming months.

Throughout the Fall, counselors will begin to meet with the students in their caseload to touch base on any questions or concerns they may have. The best work is done when the student, parents and counselors are all on the same page and communicate so we encourage you to remind your students to use the counselors as a valuable resource. As always, please feel free to reach out to your son or daughter's counselor as needed. Our counselor breakdown is below. We hope you all make the most of the great Fall weather and are anticipating the arrival of the upcoming holiday season. Be well and stay safe!

Around The Halls
AP US GOVERNMENT AND POLITICS STUDENTS MEET WITH NJ STATE SUPERIOR COURT JUDGE

On October 19, 2022, the AP Government and Politics students took part in the first of three guest lecture presentations related specifically to class instruction. Along with fellow students from the Alexander Hamilton Honor society, students met with NJ State Superior Court Justice, the Hon. Rudolph Filko. Justice Filko spoke to the students regarding his time as a lawyer and judge. Students were also given the opportunity to ask relevant questions, which provided a deeper connection to class lessons and potential future study and career goals beyond DePaul Catholic. Later on, in the course students will also get to meet with elected officials as part of this speaker series.
DePaul Catholic offers AP U.S. Government and Politics to junior and senior students in conjunction with the Social Studies department. AP U.S. Government and Politics is a college-level year-long course that not only seeks to prepare students for success on the AP Exam, but also provide students with the political knowledge and reasoning processes to participate meaningfully and thoughtfully in discussions and debates that are currently shaping American politics and society.
Trying New Instruments In Music Appreciation

Students from Music Appreciation were invited to visit stations of the instrument they were interested in. Some learned specific drum patterns or 4/4 rock grooves, Bass guitar techniques to specific songs they know, Queen and Nirvana and & White Stripes, "7 Nation Army". The students that wanted to learn piano learned "Lean On Me" and "Imagine". The guitar players learned basic open chords and syncopated strumming. All the music techniques and information covered was able to be put into action. The students loved it and enjoyed exploring the instruments and actually making music together. The best part was you could see another type of communication and confidence come from realizing they could play the instrument fairly well.
