Two Compositions! Meandering & Curves

Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!

This week’s BobBlast continues my focus on the the sixteen design compositions. Selecting a composition before starting a painting is number two of my 5Cs:

•Concept

•Composition

•Color Combination

•Continue the Series

•Commit

Of all the composition designs I use, two stand out as some of my favorites:

The first featured composition is Meandering Design–Wide sweeping gestural lines and shapes, moving around the page in a dizzy path to nowhere.

The second composition is based on Curves–Fluid, organic forms in a state of movement and suspension.

Both of these composition designs have a strong, recognizable graphic design and meaning.

Watch the demo and you will see me do some quick sketches in paint, meandering around the paper using different colors, weaving in and out of each other. I also practice with curves, using strong, wide dancing movements on the paper.

This is just the starting point. I sketch out as many ideas as I can on the different compositions–creating variations. Eventually I choose one of the variations, which I feel communicates the title I have selected for the painting.

Now I have a sense of where I’m going and why I’m painting this image in the first place. Paint in your studio and you won’t get lost!
