New ALICE Report examines financial hardship in Idaho
Forty-three percent of our neighbors are working and earn too much to qualify for federal resources, but do not earn enough to make ends meet. These are our local cashiers, cooks, administrative assistants, our children's teachers and so many others we see every day keeping our community running.

Right here in Idaho, the number of families struggling increased by 3 percent since 2019 – that's more than 43,000 households now struggling that were not before. And in our state, that puts it at a total of nearly 300,000 households who fall into this hardship.

We are ready for this long-anticipated ALICE Report that provides brand new data for the first time since 2019 on our ALICE families – those who are Asset Limited, Income Constrained, and Employed. In the coming weeks and months, we will be sharing more about our growing number of families who are unable to afford the basics of housing, child care, food, transportation, health care and technology.

Below is a snippet of the new data, and the full report is linked below if you want to dig in more.

Of Idaho's 681,926 households in 2021:
  • 11% earned below the Federal Poverty Level (FPL)
  • 32% were ALICE, in households that earned above the FPL but not enough to afford the basics in the communities where they live
  • Together, 43% of households in Idaho were below the ALICE Threshold (poverty + ALICE divided by total households)
  • Households below the ALICE Threshold were caught in the crosscurrents of the pandemic’s competing economic forces. From 2019 through 2021, the number of these struggling households increased 3% in Idaho from 251,478 to 294,579, resulting in a total of 43 percent in Idaho struggling to afford the basics.
