WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN YOUR ESTATE PLANNING AND ELDER LAW ATTORNEY

Your family is not perfect. And I do not mean that to be rude because, if we are being honest here, no one’s family is perfect. Whether it is two siblings who cannot get along, a grumpy uncle with wadded up money buried in his backyard, or a nephew who is bad with money, there is always that one person or situation you would like to pretend does not exist.

But they do exist, and those factors need to be addressed when it comes to your estate planning needs.

One of the things I do in every seminar is say point-blank that most families are dysfunctional - because I want to make sure that when people come to see us, they are not embarrassed by their family situation. I want people to feel comfortable talking about their family dynamic because if they are not, we cannot address those problems when the estate plan is put together.

What if What You Want Will Cause Your Family to Fight?

Someone recently asked me to share a lesson or two that I learned early on as an estate planning and elder law attorney that still impacts how my team and I work with our clients today.

Let me first say that I love learning. And as professionals, we should always have that mindset — even as time passes and we get 20 or 30 years of experience under our belts. There are always opportunities to be better at what you do, improve how you take care of clients, and learn from situations you could have handled differently in the past.

But to answer the question: One lesson that still sticks with me today is to make sure that if a client is coming up with a plan that I do not think will work well in the future, it is important to be honest and tell them!
