'Preparation is Key'

As part of the MCSO's commitment to ongoing professional training and preparedness, FEMA certified medical instructors Cpl. Harry Burke, Cpl. David Kelly and Dep. Edwin Walker taught a refresher course in tactical medical response to deputies at the Montgomery County Courthouse Wednesday.

Deputies were reacquainted with life-saving techniques that can be implemented in real-world scenarios; including how to tie tourniquets, open airways, stop bleeding, field-dress wounds and transport casualties.

The instructors utilized videos of actual active shooter situations as well as timed exercises and imitation blood to demonstrate tactical medical situations as accurately as possible.

Pink October

In October, the MCSO continued our recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month with another installment of our Pink Badge Fundraiser.

This year, in addition to pink badges 'rented' and worn by sworn personnel and a pink stapler 'rented' to office staff, MCSO employees could also buy pins and buttons to show their support. All proceeds are combined with funds generated online to benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation in the fight to eradicate breast cancer.

Thanks to everyone, for your generous support of this worthy cause.

Way to go, Joe!

The MCSO wishes a happy retirement to Personal Property Clerk Joe Kowalko! Joe has been a valued member of our office support staff for 19 years and is well known as the 'go to guy' for anything having to do with civil processing.

Sheriff Sean Kilkenny and Chief Adam Berry lauded Joe's tireless work ethic and positive attitude at a surprise retirement party organized by staff members on Oct. 20. Joe says he plans to take it easy in retirement, but we all know better than that. We'll miss you around here.

Congrats and best wishes, Joe!

Marking Milestones

Seven MCSO members were also honored, along with other county employees, at the annual years-of-service pin ceremony at the Montgomery County Courthouse.

Deputy Kayla Lochner-Franz, Deputy James McGlinchey, Lt. Allen Stewart, Vehicle Maintenance Technician Rich Kelly and Real Estate Supervisor Jane Castora were honored for 15 years of service.

Deputy Edwin Walker was honored for 20 years of service. And Deputy John Lomastro was honored for an amazing 35 years of service! Congratulations to all on your career milestones!

Community Connections

October has been a busy month for community outreach at the MCSO. A veteran's fair, a jobs fair and a presentation to an area Rotary Club chapter were just a few of the events giving us the opportunity to connect with the public this month.

The Willow Grove Rotary Club graciously invited Sheriff Kilkenny to speak at their October meeting.

The Sheriff spoke about the functions of the office, fielded questions, and got acquainted with club members over lunch at Palz Tap House in Huntingdon Valley.

Earlier in the month, several deputies and members of our command staff joined Sheriff Kilkenny at the inaugural Veterans Resource Fair organized by Montco Recorder of Deeds Jeanne Sorg at the county's health and human services building.

Also, our recruitment deputies Brandi Schuettler and David Sosnoskie manned the MCSO table at the Greater Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce Job Fair and Expo — one of the area's largest — at the Plymouth Meeting Mall.
