Pastor Appreciation Month Spotlight on Rev. Dr. Joe B. Martin

October is Pastor Appreciation Month! We have been highlighting a member of our pastoral team in The Communicator each week. This week, the spotlight is on our Senior Pastor, Rev. Dr. Joe B. Martin. If you’d like to share a note of appreciation for Joe B., please click here.

Joe B. was born in Duke Hospital and baptized in Duke Chapel in Durham, NC, but moved to Charlotte just before he started first grade. Ever since he was in 3rd grade, Joe B. knew, he wanted to be a Presbyterian Minister when he grew up. Yes, his 3rd grade friends thought that was weird. Surely they still do! Joe B. started his first two jobs the same year in 7th grade. He had a Charlotte News afternoon paper route and also vacuumed floors and scrubbed bathrooms at Paul Simon Menswear.

Now, Joe B’s three main hobbies are playing basketball, coaching basketball, and watching basketball. That might have something to do with his baptism location, but most of his cheering is for his alma mater Davidson College, the Golden State Warriors (only because Stephen Curry went to Davidson), and the Sardis Senior High Girls 2022 championship team he coached and will coach again this year. He reads a lot of fiction, too, but not about basketball. Ever. His favorite somewhat recent book is A Gentleman in Moscow, by Amor Towles. If you liked that book and have an audible account, he recommends listening to The Didomenico Fragment, by Amor Towles and read by Jonathan Lithgow. It is not in print and runs about 1:45.

With basketball taking its toll on his ankles and knees Joe B. keeps planning to get serious about golf, but he keeps forgetting to go play. Maybe some reminders from our Sardis family will help him get those clubs out.

Music Ministry Poinsettia Sale Fundraiser

The Sardis Sanctuary Choir is again selling Christmas poinsettias as a fundraiser, and we are asking for your support. The plants, obtained from Kings, will be gorgeous and will make a nice holiday addition to your home or a wonderful gift to a friend. Funds raised will be used for special musicians and other special music presentations. Click here to place your order!

Registration Closes Monday!

Sardis will once again be partnering with the Metrolina Ministries Youth Basketball League (“MMYBL”) for the 2022-2023 basketball season! Registration is open for ages 6 - 17. The registration period will be open through October 31 with practices beginning the first week of November, and the first games are scheduled for the first weekend after Thanksgiving, running through FebruaryRegister Online  ››

Update From Our Mission Partners in Haiti

Many thanks to all of you who currently support the ICB School/Students and Bethesda Clinic in Bayonnais, Haiti. Now, more than ever, this support is so very important. Political unrest and gang activity continues in the cities (not in Bayonnais) causing a country-wide delay in school, a lack of fuel, and decreased access to food and clean water. School employees in Bayonnais are paid year round, so your support and student sponsorship funds are still at work. Monies that are sent to Haiti, from both Friends and EWO, are deposited directly into a Charlotte based bank account and are not intercepted by anyone else. If you have questions about the school or clinic, please contact Brenda McKay. Please pray for peace and safety for the people of Haiti.

Prayer Shawls Providing Comfort for Family, Friends, and Neighbors

Do you have a friend, neighbor, or family member that would appreciate a prayer shawl? These are made with loving hands from Sardis members and can be a source of great strength especially during times of distress. Please reach out to Katie Harrington or Stephen Yount for more information on receiving one.

Our Church Family

Your church family wants to pray for you. If you have a procedure or are in the hospital, please let the church office know so we can, as a church family, be praying your healing.

November 6: Angel Tree

Our Angel Tree is part of our Planting Seeds of Hope partnership with Rama Road Elementary  School. The school identifies families who need some help for the holidays, then sends us the list of little angels who we will be helping have a merry Christmas. Again this year, we will be using Sign Up Genuis to pick our angels.

We will share the link with you through our weekly emails and a QR code you'll find at our tree set up in the new Missions Corner in the Gathering Place. Our Sign Up Genius will provide you with all the angels listed along with age, gender, and helpful gift suggestions. If shopping isn’t an option, you can still help by making a donation to our Angel Tree fund. Everything collected is used to help the children and families at Rama Road Elementary School. As the need grows, your support is appreciated more than ever. Thank you Sardis!

November 12: Mid-Carolina Handbell Festival Concert

All are invited to come enjoy the free handbell concert at the 26th annual Mid-Carolina Handbell Festival in the Sardis Presbyterian Fellowship hall at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 12.
