Renters across Canada are facing increasing challenges in their homes. Many are facing excessive rent increases they cannot afford, which are leading to their “economic eviction.” Many have little option but to live in poorly maintained and unsafe homes. Many are facing discriminatory and illegal behaviour from some landlords, with little recourse to protect their rights.
The laws that should protect renters from these housing challenges differ based on where they live. It is unfair that renters in Canada do not enjoy the same basic legal protections to live securely in their homes.
We’re joining the Canadian Centre for Housing Rights (CCHR) in calling on our federal government to take steps to ensure that renters across Canada have basic legal protections so they can live in secure homes.
In under two minutes, you can send a letter to the Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, and the Minister of Housing and Diversity and Inclusion, Ahmed Hussen, through CCHR’s website. Send a Letter
Working collaboratively to end homelessness in Canada
JANUARY 5, 2023
When community member, Marc Boychuk, saw people freezing to death on the streets in Peace River, Alberta, he didn’t wait for others to take action, and instead became part of the solution. Marc joins us this week to discuss his incredible journey, how he does so much community work when he’s not at his full-time job, and the amazing strides forward his community has made, in large, due to his efforts.

Toonies For Tummies
Right now, as many as 1 in 3 Canadian school-aged children may be at risk of trying to learn while hungry. The effects are immediate and lasting, and can affect emotional, physical and mental health.

Help change that by donating online or at participating grocery stores:
* Longo’s - Jan 26 - Feb 8
* Food Basics/Metro - Feb 2 – 15
* Sobeys/FreshCo - Mar 2 - 16
100% of your donations will benefit the growing number of hungry children and youth in our community.

Right now, your donations to last year’s campaign are hard at work as many Food & Friends programs continue to face a surge in need and costs associated with delivering nutritious meals to hungry children and youth.

A healthy meal can cost $2.50 - $4.25 compared to $1.85 a year ago and continues to strain our Food & Friends programs.

Please email foodandfriends@childrensfoundation.org with stories or testimonials about how the Toonies for Tummies grocery cards have affected your Food & Friends program.
The Makeover Project: Women’s Leadership Co-Creation Studio Advancing Equitable Non-profit Sector Change. The project aims to identify local barriers limiting women from low-income backgrounds, newcomers, disabled, 2SLGBTQ+, First Peoples, and racialized communities, and those experiencing intersectionality of these from stepping into non-profit leadership roles and create solutions.
