The City of San Gabriel has partnered with Breakthrough Sports to bring their award-winning 3-on-3 basketball league to the community this winter. The league is open to children in grades K-8 of all skill levels. The eight-week season will start next Tuesday, January 17.

Breakthrough Sports professional coaches will run each team to ensure top-end coaching for all participants. The season will consist of eight weekday night practices and seven weekend (or Friday night) games; the final week is a tournament in which each team plays two games. Update on Del Mar Ave Sewer Project

The Valley Blvd and Del Mar Avenue intersection is currently undergoing major construction work - including overhead utility lines being relocated underground, sewer pipes being replaced, and Del Mar Avenue paving. Over the next year or so, please expect lane reductions and traffic delays. We encourage you to seek alternative routes or leave earlier if you are traveling through the intersection.

Phase 1 - Utility Line Relocated Underground

Status: Completed

All overhead utility lines adjacent to the project site and crossing Valley Blvd have been moved underground. This was completed in late 2022 and is part of the hotel development project on the northwestern corner of Valley Blvd and Del Mar Avenue.

Phase 2 - Sewer Rehabilitation

Status: Expected to complete in February

As the existing sewer pipe is flowing very near capacity, we are installing a new, larger sewer line across Valley Blvd. This phase is expected to complete around February 2023.

Phase 3 - Paving of Del Mar Avenue

Status: Scheduled for 2023-2024

Once the sewer work is completed, the City will contract paving work to resurface Del Mar Ave on both sides of Valley Blvd. The intersection itself will be repaved in the next phase.

Phase 4 - Paving of Intersection and Improvements on Valley Blvd

Status: Expected for 2024 onwards

The intersection of Del Mar Avenue and Valley Blvd will be fully reconstructed in 2024 as our Measure R-funded intersection projects with Metro begin. Other improvements include new traffic signals, controller cabinets, widening lanes and crosswalks. The intersections of Valley Blvd at New Ave and at San Gabriel Blvd will also be included in this project, which will improve traffic flow along Valley Blvd.

Ways to Save on Higher Gas Bills this Winter

SoCalGas customers can expect to see changes in their natural gas bills this winter due to the rise in natural gas prices and increased transportation prices. For instance, customers whose peak winter bills were around $65 last year can expect to see bills closer to $160 this year.

To help customers manage energy usage and possibly save on bills, SoCalGas recommends the following tips:

  • Lowering your thermostat three to five degrees – if health permits – can save up to 10 percent on heating costs.
  • Washing clothes in cold water saves up to 10 percent on water heating costs.
  • Consider turning down the temperature on your water heater.
  • Limit the use of non-essential natural gas appliances such as spas, pool heaters, and fireplaces.

SoCalGas offers several assistance programs and tools that can help lower your utility bills including the Ways to Save Energy-Saving Tool and the Level Pay Plan which can help manage your monthly gas bills, and the Energy Savings Assistance Program.

Prevent Flooding and Leaks - Pick up Free Sand Bags

With more heavy rain to be expected this weekend, community members are encouraged to check their curbs and gutters to ensure they are clear of debris and clutter. This can help prevent leaks and flooding from blockages.

For more information, please visit the Public Works Department or call (626) 308-2825 between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
