Attorney General Brian Schwalb updated us on the activities of the Office of Attorney General and took questions from the audience on many topics. Many questions focused on juvenile crime prosecutions and prevention. There was also discussion of whether it was time for DC to have an elected AG to prosecute all crimes, instead of an appointed federal prosecutor for most adult crimes.

Sunday, April 14th
On April 16, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed a bill ending slavery in the District of Columbia. Passage of this act came nine months before President Lincoln issued his Emancipation Proclamation. The law ended slavery in Washington, DC which freed 3,100 individuals, reimbursed those who had legally owned these individuals, and offered the newly freed women and men money to emigrate. It is this legislation, and the courage and struggle of those who fought to make it a reality, that we commemorate every April 16th as DC Emancipation Day.
The festivities begin at 2pm with a Parade, followed by the DC Emancipation Day Concert at 3pm, and concludes with Fireworks at 8:30pm.
